Preliminary study of community-acquired Staphylococcus aureus infection in Manaus Hospital, Amazonia Region, Brazil

Abstract: Methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus is considered a public health problem with a strong potential for dissemination and high rates of morbidity and mortality. In this study we describe bacteriological and epidemiological characteristics of Staphylococcus aureus in Manaus (Amazon region). During the one-year study period (2000-2001), sixteen cases of acute pyogenic multiple abscess were evaluated. Community-acquired S. aureus was identified as causative agent in 10 (62.5%) patients. The strains tested w… Show more

“…In North America [ 4 , 24 , 25 ], the Middle East [ 7 , 9 , 13 , 26 ], India [ 27 ] and the Canary Islands [ 28 ] rates of 38 – 50%, 33–40%, 18 – 43% and 25% respectively, have been reported. MRSA rates from the Caribbean are scanty, but data from a previous report [ 21 ], Jamaica [ 29 ], Cuba [ 30 ] and a French territory island [ 31 ] have shown rates of isolation to be < 10%. From South America [ 4 , 32 - 34 ] and Europe [ 18 , 35 , 36 ], rates of 10 – 66% and 25 – 58% respectively, have been seen.…”

“…Such a clone was first described in Brazil as CA-MRSA before being isolated from patients with skin and soft tissue infections which were not exposed to classical risk factors for nosocomial infection [ 80 ]. Several infections caused by CA-MRSA ranging from mild [ 81 85 ] to severe [ 86 88 ] were reported in Brazil in the 2000s. Although the properties of CA-MRSA appear to make it less aggressive than hospital clones, the OSP clone presents virulence factors involved in the high pathogenicity, such as the PVL, which kills immune cells and induces tissue necrosis [ 82 , 83 , 86 , 87 , 89 , 90 ].…”
