Eficiência do diagnóstico coproscópico de Schistosoma mansoni em fezes prensadas

Abstract: The control of schistosomiasis depends mostly upon the sensitivity of stool examinations. We used both the Kato-Katz technique and the compression of samples between the slide and a polypropylene cover glass, according to Ferreira. Out of 1,282 samples collected between 1998 and 2000 in the Palha District, Municipality of Bananal, São Paulo State, Brazil, 105 (8.2 %) were positive. The first and second methods revealed 90 (7%) and 88 (6.9 %) positive cases, respectively. According to the kappa statistic, both … Show more

“…Studies conducted in areas with those characteristics have demonstrated a direct relationship between the number of slides analysed and the infection rate of the disease (Enk et al 2008). However, the preparation of multiple slides and samples for each individual results in logistical difficulties, thus neutralising the operational advantages of the technique and stands in contrast to the examination of a single slide per individual using the Kato-Katz method for control campaigns (Teles et al 2003).…”

“…As the prevalence of the infection decreases, new problems arise. Smaller egg production and irregularity of egg migration to the intestinal lumen, in addition, the development of immunity 21,22 can make it difficult to identify positive cases. Thus, it may be necessary to examine more samples and greater masses of feces than in previous routine work.…”

“…In Bananal, from the year 2001 onwards, we started to examine two slides from each fecal sample, in addition to higher volumes of feces per slide, using, as routine techniques, microscopy of pressed fecal samples and serological examinations 21,23 . Such routine was responsible for the maintenance of the efficiency of the active surveillance of new cases during the interval from 2001 to 2003.…”

“…Conclusões: Neste estudo, o aumento de uma para três lâminas analisadas por amostra pelo KK, mostrou ser um procedimento útil para o aumento da sensibilidade diagnóstica desta técnica. 2 as the standard diagnostic method for intestinal schistosomiasis, as it is simple and low cost, and the intensity of infection can be estimated 3 . However, KK smears and other parasitological methods frequently fail to detect low-intensity infections 4 , which leads to an underestimation of the actual prevalence of disease 5,6 .…”
