Diagnostic tests for amoebic liver abscess: comparison of enzyme - linked immunosorbent assay (Elisa) and counterimmunoelectrophoresis (CIE)

Abstract

The liver abscess is the m ost fr e q u e n t extra in testin a l com plication o f in testin a l amoebiasis: its diagnosis is suggested by the c lin ic a ip ic tu re b u t it m tist be c o n firm e d by p a raclinic tests. Them ost strin g e n td ia g n o sis requires id en tifica tio n o f E. histoiytica. B u t tbis ispossible o nly in a f e w cases. Serological tests g reatly im prove the d iagnosis o f this o u n d th a t 90% w ere p ositive by the ELISA m eth o d a n d 66.6% by the CIE technique. In p a tie n ts w ith am oebic liver abscess, the results sh o w ed th a t the ELISA was m ore sensitive th a n the CIE, as itp re se n te d a higher sensitivity (100% ) th a n th a t o f the CIE technique (66% ).
