Abstract: The possible presence of Leishmania in the peripheral blood of 60 patients with American cutaneous leishmaniasis was investigated by the culture of circulating leucocytes. Patients were selected with a variety of clinical forms of the disease and in different evolutionary stages of infection. Biopsies of skin and/or mucosal lesions were made in order to isolate the parasites, which were identified using monoclonal antibodies. 40 isolations were obtained, including 5 of Leishmania (Viannia) braziliensis, 3 L. (… Show more

“…Involvement of mucosae and multiple cutaneous sites may also result from the dissemination of the parasite through the blood or lymphatic route as suggested for human infection (Martinez et al 1992;Sousa et al 1995 ;Weigle and Saravia 1996). In the present study there was no evidence of dissemination of Leishmania through blood cultures, suggesting that blood dissemination should be an eventual or intermittent phenomenon (Bowdre et al 1981;Martinez et al 1992;Silveira et al 1989;Sousa et al 1995). Other authors tested whole blood, buffy coat and bone marrow aspirates with the more-sensitive method PCR to detect L. (Viannia) infection in both asymptomatic and symptomatic dogs (Reithinger et al 2003).…”
