FREQUENCY OF Candida SPECIES IN A TERTIARY CARE HOSPITAL IN TRIANGULO MINEIRO, MINAS GERAIS STATE, BRAZIL

Abstract: Infections by Candida species are a high-impact problem in public health due to their wide incidence in hospitalized patients. The goal of this study was to evaluate frequency, susceptibility to antifungals, and genetic polymorphism of Candida species isolated from clinical specimens of hospitalized patients. The Candida isolates included in this study were obtained from blood cultures, abdominal fluids, and central venous catheters (CVC) of hospitalized patients at the Clinical Hospital of the Federal Univers… Show more

“…This is because C. albicans is the most common and most pathogenic [20] among Candida species [21] worldwide [22]. The findings of this study are similar to the study of Menezes [23], Bhattacharjee [9], and Lima [3]. Further noted in other studies, non-albicans Candida were starting to rise in numbers [9,24] and seen as a suggestive emergence of important pathogens.…”

“…These results are higher than those observed in previous studies conducted in the same NICU, where the frequency of Candida spp. was below 10% [7,29]. This can be related to the admission of newborns with severe health condition, especially because most newborns of the study were extremely low weight.…”

“…The C. parapsilosis complex has emerged as a major cause of candidemia worldwide among non-albicans species [7,8]. In addition, it is associated with several outbreaks of NICU and high morbidity and mortality rates [6,9,10].…”

“…Quite a few of the reports deemed relevant in the ELS (43) presented information demonstrating a low or very low prevalence (seldom above 5%) of K. marxianus among fungi (mainly Candida spp.) isolated from patients with various serious underlying diseases, like cancer or HIV, or other immunosuppressed states, and patients with catheters (de Freitas et al., ; Ghahri et al., ; Parmeland et al., ; Abrantes et al., ; Dufresne et al., ; Haddadi et al., ; Taj‐Aldeen et al., ; Youngster et al., ; Leuck et al., ; Menezes et al., ; Nidhi et al., ; Nieto et al., ; Sahin et al., ).…”
