Distribution of phlebotomine sandflies (Diptera: Psychodidae) of medical importance in Mato Grosso State, Brazil

Abstract: SUMMARYIntense environmental impacts, causing alterations of the natural habitats of fauna, including those of sandfly disease vectors are observed in Mato Grosso State, Central Brazil. Entomologic survey of phlebotomines was based on light trap and was carried out by entomological nucleus of the FUNASA and SES in the period between 1996 and 2001. Eighty eight species were identified, including the following sandflies with medical importance to leishmaniasis:

“…the main vector for Leishmania (Leishmania) amazonensis, indoors and in areas surrounding homes, is highly significant. This demonstrates gradual adaptation of this species to the human environment, in contrast with its previous restriction to wooded areas, as suggested by Oliveira et al 18 and Nunes et al 17 in studies conducted in Campo Grande, Mato Grosso do Sul, and in a studied carried out in Mato Grosso 27 . In Mato Grosso do Sul, Leishmania amazonensis has been reported to affect dogs, cats and humans 4 22 28 .…”

“…Light trap captures allowed the identification of 630 sandflies belonging to 28 species, from 11 genera, confirming the large diversity of the phlebotomine sandfly fauna at these three settlements in the municipality of Cáceres, as already reported from other places in the State of Mato Grosso [14][15][16] . According to Missawa and Maciel 17 and Amaral et al 18 , the variety of phlebotomine sandflies found in the State of Mato Grosso is as expected (107 species) considering the diversity of biomes characteristic of the region, such as savannah, Pantanal, transition forest, and the Amazon rainforest.…”

“…They were found in three biomes (Amazon rainforest, savannah, and Pantanal) 4 . All the 141 cities from the State have recorded autochthonous cases of the integumental form of the disease in these three ecosystems 5 , and the human visceral form is distributed in 34 municipalities of the State of Mato Grosso, with higher prevalence in the south-central and southeast regions of the State 6 .…”

“…This species is prevalent in the Northern region of Brazil (37) (38) , as well as in the Northern region of MT (39) , where it was found naturally infected with Leishmania infantum (14) . The frequency of L. antunesi in the urban areas of Sinop highlights the importance of new studies focusing on this species in these areas.…”
