Serotyping and evaluation of the virulence in mice of Streptococcus suis strains isolated from diseased pigs

Abstract: A total of 110 strains of Streptococcus suis, isolated from diseased pigs in Brazil were serotyped and analyzed for virulence. Serotyping of the strains resulted in the following classification: 42 strains of serotype 2 (38.2%), 10 strains of serotype 14 (9.1%), seven strains of serotype 9 (6.4%), three strains each of serotype 7 and 11 (2.7%), two strains each of serotype 1 and 8 (1.8%) and one strain each of serotypes 1/2, 3, 5, 6 and 10 (0.9%). Cross reactions among serotypes 1, 14 and 7 were observed in 21… Show more

“…A few reports on serotype 2 strains recovered from diseased pigs in Brazil have been published (Costa et al , 2005; Doto et al , 2016; Rocha et al , 2012), though no human case has yet been reported. Human cases have been reported in Argentina (Lopreto et al , 2005; Callejo et al ., 2014; Nagel et al , 2008) and, only once, in Chile (Alarcon et al , 2013), but strains were not further characterized.…”

“…Serotyping is an important step in the routine diagnostic procedure for S. suis infections. Different procedures have been described, but most laboratories use the coagglutination technique (Higgins & Gottschalk, 2001; Costa et al , 2005). Although the incidence of nontypeable isolates is in general low, their isolation is reported in the literature (Higgins & Gottschalk, 2000; Wei et al , 2009).…”

“…In particular the liver and lungs showed very similar infection patterns. It is generally accepted that the mouse is a good model for S. suis infection [1,29], although there have been some studies questioning the mouse model [31]. We believe that this mouse model can be used to examine the effect of a treatment with a potential anti-adhesion reagent.…”

“…Streptococcus suis is a major swine pathogen worldwide and is associated with meningitis, arthritis, endocarditis, septicemia, pneumonia and sudden death especially in young pigs [1]. S. suis is considered a zoonotic agent associated with human infections and has especially been described as the cause of meningitis in persons with occupational exposure to pigs [2,3].…”
