Candidemia in a Brazilian tertiary care hospital: species distribution and antifungal susceptibility patterns

Abstract: Recent studies have shown differences in the epidemiology of invasive infections caused by Candida species worldwide. In the period comprising August 2002 to August 2003, we performed a study in Santa Casa Complexo Hospitalar, Brazil, to determine Candida species distribution associated with candidemia and their antifungal susceptibility profiles to amphotericin B, fluconazole and itraconazole. Antifungal susceptibility was tested according to the broth microdilution method described in the NCCLS (M27A-2 metho… Show more

“…Although there are some large studies published in this field, most of the data on candidemia in Spain are limited to retrospective reviews of medical records or observational studies conducted in a limited number of medical centers (4,9,10,39). Consequently, the incidence of candidemia in tertiary care hospitals in Spain is largely unknown, and no reliable national data are available.…”

“…All participants freely signed informed consent forms, and their identities were kept secret. Data obtained in the survey were contrasted with the Infectious Diseases Society of America's (IDSA) recommendations for the treatment of candidemia 3 , and also with previously published epidemiological data from the participating centers 1,2,[5][6][7] .Statistical analyses were performed using SPSS version 16.0 for Windows. Categorical variables were compared using chi-squared or Fisher's exact tests, wherever appropriate.…”
