Vibrio metschnikovii among diarrheal patients during cholera epidemic in Recife Brazil

Abstract: Although known since the last century, Vibrio metschnikovii was only appropriately described and recognized as a new species within the genus Vibrio in 1978. Rarely is the organism linked to human disease. Only once has V. metschnikovii been incriminated as responsible for human diarrhea, and affecting an old woman who suffered from diabetes and had a hepatoma. During the first two years of the present cholera epidemic, which reached Recife in March, 1992, we screened for vibrio nearly 4000 diarrheal fecal spe… Show more

“…even though the oxidase test was negative. Consequently our results are in agreement with those from the literature that demonstrate that typical colony morphology is an important step to assure isolation of V. metschnikovii (Dalsgaard et al, 1996;Elhadi et al, 2004;Farmer, Hickman-Brenner, Fanning, Gordon, & Brenner, 1988;Magalhães et al, 1996;Urdaci et al, 1988).…”

“…As demonstrated previously by Magalhães et al (1996), because an active search for vibrios was undertaken, it was possible to detect V. metschnikovii in the samples examined. These authors reported 6 isolates of V. metschnikovii from diarrheal patients in Brazil during their surveillance for cholera in the same period as V. metschnikovii strains from the present study were obtained.…”

“…This organism is one of the species of Vibrio that can be found in human clinical specimens. Although not a bona fide human pathogen, V. metschnikovii has been reported to cause human diarrhea (Dalsgaard et al, 1996;Buck, 1992;Magalhaes et al, 1996). Furthermore, V. metschnikovii has been isolated from lakes and streams with evidence of fecal contamination (Dalsgaard et al, 1996;Bitto et al, 1992).…”

“…This facultative bacterium is often found in natural aquatic environments such as seawater (9). In addition, the bacterium has been known as one of causative agents that can induce dyspneic symptoms (10), diarrhea (11,12), wound infection (13), pneumonia (1) and leg ulcer (9). There have been brief reports on alkaline proteases (AprB, AprJ1, VapT and VapK) from a few V. metschnikovii strains.…”
