Total serum IgE and parasite: specific IgG and IgA antibodies in human strongyloidiasis

Abstract: Total serum IgE, and Strongyloides - specific IgG and IgA antibodies were studied in 27 patients with parasitologically proven strongyloidiasis. Clinical manifestations in this case series were investigated by a restrospective study of the patient's records. Total serum IgE levels were elevated (greater than 250 IU/ml) in 59% of the patients (mean concentration = 1364 IU/ml). Parasite - specific IgG and IgA antibodies were detected by ELISA in the serum of 23 (85.2%) and 21 (77.8%) patients, respectively. Elev… Show more

“…Considering the difficulty for obtaining mass production of S. stercoralis filariform larvae, with the involved risk of infectivity for laboratory technicians, the standardization and utilization of a heterologous antigen from S. ratti has become necessary, which can be used as reliable source of antigens for immunodiagnosis in human strongyloidiasis (Grove and Blair 1981;Rossi et al 1993). Thus, keeping rats infected with S. ratti would be much easier than mantaining monkeys (Campos et al 1988) or dogs (Gonçalves et al 2007) with S. stercoralis.…”

“…in patients with strongyloidiasis (Conway et al 1993;Rossi et al 1993;Atkins et al 1997;). In the present study, patients with Coefficients of correlation were determined by the Spearman correlation test strongyloidiasis had significantly higher levels and positivity rates of specific total IgG to Strongyloides spp.…”

“…Regarding the difficulty for obtaining sufficient amount of S. stercoralis filariform larvae, it has become necessary the standardization and utilization of heterologous antigens from S. ratti, which can be used as reliable source of antigens for immunodiagnosis in human strongyloidiasis, thus replacing S. stercoralis antigen (Grove & Blair 1981, Rossi et al 1993. In this study, patients with strongyloidiasis (group I) had significantly higher levels and positivity rates of specific IgE to S. ratti as compared to the patients with other intestinal parasites (group II) and healthy subjects (group III).…”

“…Production of IgA, IgE, IgG, and IgM Abs has also been demonstrated (14,15). However, far less attention has been given to the role of leukotrienes in host defense during strongyloidiasis infection, in which they could act as mediators of antiparasitic activity.…”
