Abstract: Between March and July, 1992, we screened for Vibrio all fecal samples submitted for bacteriologic diagnosis at a private clinical laboratory in Recife. Of 1435 cultures examined only 1 (0.07%) was positive for V.cholerae 01, biovar Eltor, serovar Inaba, but 17 (1.2%) yielded non-cholera Vibrio (V.cholerae non-01; V.fluvialis; V.furnissii, V.parahaemolyticus and Vibrio spp). Thus, V.cholerae 01, differently of other enteropathogenic vibrios, spared individuals of good socioeconomic conditions even during the c… Show more

“…In Brazil, and USSR, the first report on the association of V. fluvialis with diarrhea was reported during 1990 and 1991, respectively ((Magalhães et al, 1990; Libinzon et al, 1991). Though the incidence of cholera among high socioeconomic population in Brazil was very low (0.07%), but the other vibrios including V. fluvialis comparatively prevailed more (1.2%; Magalh a, 1993). In Volga delta, Russia, acute enteric infections caused by V. fluvialis reaches about 30% during the summer months, mainly due to consumption of water than sea/fresh water fishes (Boui, 2000).…”

“…Although reports exist of the occurrence of extra intestinal cases, V. fluvialis is mainly associated with sporadic cases and outbreaks of gastroenteritis in humans, producing diarrhea very similar to cholera ( 2 ). Even though only two reports indicating the occurrence of diarrhea caused by V. fluvialis in Brazil are available in the literature, the presence of this species in the environment is well known ( 3 , 4 , 5 ).…”
