Show more

“…1 The attachment of IRBCs to the microvascular endothelium of brain tissue appears to be a central pathogenic event in severe malaria. 2 This phenomenon was also found in other deep organs such as the lung 3 and the placenta. 4 The placenta is also a preferential site for sequestration of IRBCs and can show high parasite densities, while the peripheral circulation is free of parasites.…”

“…The incidence of pulmonary dysfunction is 3% to 10% in patients with P. falciparum infections, and the mortality rate is approximately 70%. (51) The first sign of pulmonary dysfunction is an increase in the respiratory rate that precedes radiographic changes. (1) The most severe presentation of pulmonary dysfunction is acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), which is characterized by diffuse endothelial injury with increased capillary permeability (42) that manifests itself early in the course of the disease.…”

“…In the Americas, control programs are based on opportune diagnostic and adequate treatment of clinical malaria cases 8 . Consequently, asymptomatic infection could be an important challenge for control 12 .…”
