Show more

“…Thus, early diagnosis followed by effective therapy may link a parasite genotype commonly found in mucosal leishmaniasis and disseminated leishmaniasis to cutaneous leishmaniasis. Another important cautionary note regards the possibility of mixed infections previously reported in New and Old World leishmaniases (15,21,28,29). In such instances, a dominant strain, possibly due to its greater relative load, immune response evasiveness, or drug resistance, may more strongly influence outcome.…”

“…ML, the hyperergic invasive ulcerative form that progresses in the absence of any apparent cellular defect, is most frequently associated with L. braziliensis (103), but Leishmania panamensis (278), Leishmania guyanensis (213,277), and members of the L. mexicana complex (26,313) can also cause this mutilating form of the disease. In addition, a few human cases of mixed parasite infections (L. braziliensis and L. amazonensis or L. braziliensis and L. chagasi) have been described (221,289). Cases of CL apparently due to naturally occurring hybrid parasites (L. braziliensis x L. panamensis and L. braziliensis x L. guyanensis) have also been reported recently from Nicaragua (71) and Venezuela (41), respectively.…”
