Introduction:The burnout syndrome is a psychosocial phenomenon that arises as a response to chronic interpersonal stressors present at work. There are many aspects that make nursing assistants vulnerable to chronic stress situations that may lead to burnout, highlighting the low degree of autonomy in the healthcare staff and spending more in direct contact with patients. Objectives: To assess the prevalence of the burnout syndrome in nursing assistants in a public hospital, as well as its association with socio-demographic and professional variables. Methods: A socio-demographic and professional questionnaire and the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI-SS) were applied to 534 nursing assistants. Results: The prevalence of burnout syndrome among nursing assistants was 5.9%. High emotional exhaustion was observed in 23.6%, 21.9% showed high depersonalization, and 29.9% low professional achievement. It was found statistically significant associations between emotional exhaustion, job sector and marital status; depersonalization, having children and health problems; low professional achievement and job sector and number of jobs. There was association between job satisfaction and the three dimensions. Conclusison: Professionals working in the health area must pay intense and extended attention to people who are dependent upon others. The intimate contact of the nursing assistants with hard-to-handle patients, as well as being afraid to make mistakes in healthcare are additional chronic stress factors and burnout syndrome cases related in this study.

Resumo A Síndrome de Burnout resulta do estresse crônico no trabalho e é composta por três dimensões: exaustão emocional, despersonalização e realização profissional. Objetivou-se identificar, em professores da educação básica de Londrina, no Paraná, fatores associados a piores níveis nessas dimensões. Trata-se de estudo transversal realizado entre agosto de 2012 e junho de 2013. Foram pesquisadas características sociodemográficas, ocupacionais, relacionamentos na escola, violência contra o professor e Síndrome de Burnout por meio da escala Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI). Pontuações > percentil 75 na MBI (exaustão emocional e despersonalização) ou < percentil 25 (realização profissional) foram consideradas como piores níveis. Foram realizadas análises bivariadas e múltiplas por regressão de Poisson. Participaram da pesquisa 804 professores. Após ajustes, relacionamento ruim/regular com alunos associou-se a piores níveis nas três dimensões da escala. Tempo insuficiente para família/lazer e relacionamento ruim/regular com pais permaneceram significativos para piores níveis de exaustão emocional e de despersonalização. Violência física, quantidade de alunos considerada ruim/regular e infraestrutura ruim da escola ainda se mantiveram associadas a piores níveis de despersonalização, enquanto oportunidade ruim/regular para expressar opiniões no trabalho associou-se à baixa realização profissional. Ambiente de trabalho hostil e outros fatores laborais devem ser priorizados por políticas de prevenção da Síndrome de Burnout em professores.

Quality of life is an essential aspect of physical and mental health, which can be affected by burnout. There is evidence that shows the effects of psychological disorders such as professional exhaustion associated with poor quality of life as a reduction of motivation and professional achievement. Besides, burnout influences social, physical, cognitive and professional aspects. Therefore, the objective of this study was to analyze the participants' vulnerability to burnout and their quality of life levels. Also, to compare the quality of life of the individuals most vulnerable to this syndrome with the rest of the sample of lower vulnerability. The present study included 52 workers between doctors and teachers. Data collection consisted of the Sociodemographic Inventory, Whoqol-Bref, and Maslach Burnout Inventory response. The results showed that 19.2% of the total sample had high levels of burnout and these same participants also obtained lower scores in all domains of quality of life compared to the other participants. These problems can be seen as a social issue because their consequences, such as the loss of quality of work and even harmful effects on the health system and education extend and affect other people who are directly related to those professionals vulnerable to the syndrome.

Abstract: Public servants' perceptions of their work environment play an important role as a predictor of burnout. Viewing work as stressful and the presence of people who negatively affect the environment proved to be the elements of greatest importance.
