Condiciones de salud y de trabajo informal en recuperadores ambientales del área rural de Medellín, Colombia, 2008

Abstract: Recyclers are a potential support to integral waste management in rural areas of Medellin, although the informal nature of their work exposes them to working conditions that directly affect their health and the health of their families. The social recognition of recycling goes hand in hand with the improvement in the working conditions of the people engaged in this activity. The environmental recycling workers, even if belonging to a union, have precarious work and health conditions. The transformation of thes… Show more

“…Some relevant items in the "Life, work and health condition" analytical category contribute to help better understanding the herein assessed matters. The first of them corroborates the idea that the precarious working conditions waste pickers live in are characterized by high socio-environmental vulnerability (aLENCaR;CaRDoSo;aNTUNES, 2009;BaLLESTERoS;aRaNGo E URREGo, 2012;CoELHo et al, 2016b;CoELHo et al, 2016c;SoUSa, MENDES, 2006). Moreover, such environment favors the occurrence of labor accidents (CaVaLCaNTE;FRaNCo, 2007;CoELHo et al, 2016c;SHIBaTa et al, 2015) and of physical and mental diseases (aLENCaR;CaRDoSo;aNTUNES, 2009;CoELHo et al, 2016b;aLVaRaDo-ESQUIVEL et al, 2008;aLVaRaDo-ESQUIVEL, 2013;aRaÚJo;SaTo, 2017;GUTBERLET;Ba-EDER, 2008;RoZMaN et al, 2008;SHIBaTa et al, 2015;SINGH;CHoKHaNDRE, 2015) capable of impairing their quality of life and health promotion.…”

“…The selected articles evidenced waste pickers' low adhesion to individual protection equipment use, although they also showed the inappropriate use of materials found among the collected waste. However, these materials do not protect waste pickers from risks inherent to the waste-picking activity (aLENCaR;CaRDoSo;aNTUNES, 2009;BaLLESTERoS;aRaNGo E URREGo, 2012;PEREIRa et al, 2012;SaNToS, SIL-Va, 2009;SHIBaTa et al, 2015;SoUSa, MENDES, 2006). Hoefel et al (2013) point out that such refusal results from their complaint about the discomfort of picking with gloves; despite the risks, waste pickers rather do not wear gloves, since productivity is a relevant factor for them.…”

“…These conditions may be related with an exhausting type of work that requires excessive physical effort and repetitive movements and is characterised by long working days that may reach 60 or more hours per week. The studies of Alencar et al (2009); Ballesteros et al (2012); Gangopadhyay and Das (2012); Lakhani (2004); Rosa and Matos (2010) explored this issue. The fact that the informal worker has no social or labour rights contributes to job exploitation and insecurity.…”

“…Co-op members do not stop working to seek medical care unless the injury is serious. Studies in Brazil 9 and other countries 12,31 also reveal that SF operate in an unhealthy and unsafe manner. According to Ballesteros et al 31 , who compared the health status of recycling workers organized in associations with independent ones, there is similar morbidity for both groups without any gain in work quality for the former.…”
