“…Bailey and colleagues (2003) report that younger age is associated with a more accepting attitude toward abortion among Brazilian adolescents at one-year follow-up, and García and colleagues (2004) find that older Mexican adults (aged 45-65) are more likely to be antichoice compared with those aged 15-24. Studies documenting a significant relationship between educational attainment and abortion opinion find that higher levels of education are associated with more favorable attitudes about abortion (Cesar et al 1997;Becker et al 2002;Bailey et al 2003). Two studies find that respondents who are less religious are significantly more likely to hold favorable attitudes toward abortion than are those who are more religious (Casanueva et al 1997;García et al 2004).…”

“…Knowledge, attitudes, and personal experience regarding abortion and abortion law are also analyzed as correlates of abortion opinion in several articles. Two studies of Brazilian women find that those who had an abortion are more supportive of the procedure than those who did not (Osis et al 1994;Cesar et al 1997). Bailey and colleagues (2003) report that Brazilian adolescent girls at baseline who had an abortion are more likely to view the choice as justified than are those who carried their pregnancies to term without considering abortion; at one-year follow-up, however, the differences between the two groups are no longer significant.…”

“…12,13 A common finding of all studies was that the higher the level of education, the more liberal the opinion of Brazilians was with respect to abortion. [12][13][14] More recently, a number of women's organisations launched an initiative called ''Journey towards the Legalisation of Abortion'', with the aim of making abortion legal. These organisations recognise the importance of strong social support with obstetrician-gynaecologists as allies.…”
