Budget impact from the incorporation of positron emission tomography – computed tomography for staging lung cancers

Abstract: OBJECTIVE To estimate the budget impact from the incorporation of positron emission tomography (PET) in mediastinal and distant staging of non-small cell lung cancer.METHODS The estimates were calculated by the epidemiological method for years 2014 to 2018. Nation-wide data were used about the incidence; data on distribution of the disease´s prevalence and on the technologies’ accuracy were from the literature; data regarding involved costs were taken from a micro-costing study and from Brazilian Unified Healt… Show more

“…Unsuccessful surgery is unlikely to lead to a cure [12]. Five-year survival of patients in relation to postoperative staging (pTNM), after histological examination of the removed pulmonary parenchyma and lymph nodes, is lessened from 70 to 0% as the TNM stage grows [16], with a total 5-year survival for stage III, less than 15% [17]. The TNM Classification of Malignant Tumours (TNM) is a notation system that describes the stage of a cancer which originates from a solid tumour with alphanumeric codes.…”
