This essay analyzes the challenges of graduate programs in administration in Brazil, considering mainly the challenges of the early 2020s, marked by changes in the assessments put forward by the Brazilian agency CAPES and the perspectives of a career in the field. Some of the most relevant facts that occurred from 2000 to 2020 were considered, indicating the need for changes in the education priorities, from a focus based on rigor in research to a focus on practical relevance. The reported situation and the intellectual debate on rigor and relevance led to two models: one oriented to scientific production and the other oriented to societal impact. When assuming the opportunity for a change toward the societal impact model, the study suggests updates in educational projects, research practices, knowledge dissemination channels, and research incentive policies.

Academic productivity standards in the field of information technology (IT) seem to address only in part the interests of practice – what is best known as the conflict between rigor and relevance in research. Based on assumptions about the interest, the currency, the accessibility and the applicability of academic production, the authors collected the perception of 11 researchers and 11 managers highly representative of the IT field in Brazil. Brazil was the site of research given its boosting economy and solid IT industry. Results suggest the need to rethink the current system of research production and communication in order to promote a more fruitful dialogue between research and practice.

Rigor and relevance are essential to guarantee the quality of research and it is a topic of growing discussion given its importance in the scientific environment. The present study aimed to assess the level of rigor and relevance of case studies in accounting information systems, through a qualitative and quantitative analysis of elements of rigor proposed by Paiva Júnior, Leão and Mello (2011). The research has a descriptive character, documental procedure and qualitative approach. It used the SPELL database, selected articles published from 2015 to 2020, with the keywords "Information System", "Adoption of Information Technologies" and "Management Information System", where 20 articles were found, and after filtering, 8 were excluded because they were not case studies. Thus, 12 articles were studied and evaluated regarding the fulfillment of the elements of the validity and reliability criteria. It is concluded that the progress regarding the state of the art was small, since few articles fully met the elements proposed for analysis of rigor. Keywords: Information system. O presente estudo teve como propósito avaliar o nível de rigor e relevância de estudos de caso em sistemas de informação contábil, através de uma análise qualitativa e quantitativa de elementos de rigor propostos por Paiva Júnior, Leão e Mello (2011). A pesquisa possui caráter descritivo, procedimento documental e abordagem qualitativa. Utilizou a base de dados SPELL, selecionou artigos publicados de 2015 a 2020, com as palavras chaves "Sistema de Informação", "Adoção de Tecnologias da Informação" e "Sistema de Informação Gerencial", onde foram encontrados 20 artigos, e após filtrar, 8 foram excluídos por não se tratarem de estudos de caso. Assim, 12 artigos foram estudados e avaliados quanto ao preenchimento dos elementos dos critérios de validade e confiabilidade. Conclui-se que o avanço quanto ao estado da arte foi pequeno, uma vez que poucos artigos atenderam totalmente aos elementos propostos para análise do rigor. Palavras-chave: Sistema de informação.
