-The objective of this work was to evaluate yield and average fruit weight of strawberry cultivars Albion, Camarosa, Festival and Oso Grande, in two closed hydroponic systems (gutters and grow bags), using coconut fibre as substrate. The experimental design was of randomised blocks, divided into strips, with five replications. The hydroponic systems did not differ significantly as to yield, with advantages, such as savings in water and fertilizer and reduced environmental impact, over open systems. The most productive cultivar was Festival, followed by Oso Grande, with average yields of 6.99 kg m -2 and 5.56 kg m -2 respectively. The cultivars with the greatest fruit weight were Oso Grande and Albion, having averages of 11.8 and 11.1 g respectively, with the former being significantly superior to the latter. The highest yield (7.4 kg m -2 ) was obtained from the cultivar Festival under the gutter system. The Ibiapaba region has conditions which are favourable to strawberry production in relation to precocity (harvesting starts in the 6th week of growth) and production continues throughout the year; however there is a need to test new cultivars and to improve the cultivation techniques with an aim to producing larger-sized fruit.

Avaliou-se a produtividade e a eficiência de utilização da água do morangueiro cultivado em dois tipos de sistemas hidropônicos fechados, na serra da Ibiapaba-CE. Os tratamentos foram constituídos dos sistemas de cultivo hidropônicos fechados em calhas e em sacos de cultivo, contendo substrato de fibra de coco e duas cultivares de morango (Festival e Oso Grande). O delineamento experimental foi em blocos casualizados, com os tratamentos de sistemas de cultivo arranjados em faixas e cinco repetições. Os sistemas de cultivo hidropônicos em calhas e em sacos apresentaram produtividades semelhantes (6425 g m-2 e 6125 g m-2 , respectivamente). Os maiores valores de produtividade e de eficiência de utilização da água foram obtidos com a cv. Festival, no sistema de cultivo em calhas (7405 g m-2 e 12,7 g L-1 , respectivamente).

Plastic soil covers in vegetative development, production and quality of strawberries The purpose this study was to evaluate the vegetative development, yield and quality of strawberry cultivars of short and neutral days as a function of soil cover. Two experiments were carried out in a protected environment. The experimental design used in both experiments consisted of randomized blocks, with subdivided plots. Harvests were carried out every two days, when the berries presented 75% of the red coloration of the epidermis, with evaluation of yield, number of fruits/plant, and fresh biomass of the fruits. For fruit quality, the pH, SS, titratable acidity, SS/TA ratio and fruit staining were evaluated. The contents of chlorophyll a and b, chlorophyll a + b and the chlorophyll a/b ratio in the leaves were also measured. At the end of the productive cycle, destructive evaluations of leaf number, leaf area and dry biomass of shoot were carried out. Cultivation on white PSC presented plants with lower vegetative development, higher yield, and fruit size. Among the cultivars of short days, Camino Real presented bigger and more attractive fruits regarding the appearance of color of epidermis. For neutral day cultivars, Aromas obtained higher yield.
