Objective A strategic analysis was carried out in order to verify the relevance of the Food and Nutrition Security Plan of the state of Santa Catarina to the Brazilian concept of Food and Nutrition Security. Methods A matrix containing 7 dimensions, 16 sub-dimensions and 35 indicators was used for the evaluation, which were evaluated as poor, regular, good and excellent for each component. Results The Plan was evaluated as being of good relevance to its objective. However, it was only relevant to 53% of the analyzed dimensions, and the dimension of promoting universal access to adequate food had the worst result. The dimensions of developing permanent processes of education, research and training, and of evaluation and monitoring, obtained the best results, with the Plan being evaluated as of good relevance to these dimensions. Still, for half of the sub-dimensions and for 60% of the analyzed indicators, the Plan was evaluated as poor or regular. Conclusion It is hoped that the results of this research can qualify the Plan researched, as well as stimulate reflections for the construction of Plans in the other Brazilian states.

Os indígenas Yanaconas, residentes em seis Departamentos da Colômbia, sofreram drásticas mudanças nos seus sistemas alimentares a partir da década de 1990. O objetivo do artigo é fazer uma análise histórica desses sistemas alimentares a partir de 1980, entender os fatores que determinaram as mudanças e assim compreender o estado atual de segurança alimentar do Povo Yanacona. Os dados primários foram coletados mediante trabalho de campo. Três sistemas alimentares foram identificados entre 1980 e 2015. O sistema alimentar entre 1980 e 1989 estava caraterizado pela produção para autoconsumo. O sistema alimentar entre 1990 e 1999 esteve marcado pela substituição da produção agrícola pelo cultivo de papoula. A partir do ano 2000 o sistema alimentar está caracterizado pela busca da autonomia alimentar. O conflito armado e as políticas públicas foram identificados como os fatores determinantes nas mudanças dos sistemas alimentares. Colômbia.Looking the past, building the future: food security at Guachicono Indigenous Reserve, Colombia AbstractThe Yanaconas Indians, residing in six departments of Colombia, have undergone drastic changes in their food systems since the 1990s. The objective of the article is to make a historical analysis of these food systems from the 1980’s, to understand the factors that determined the changes occurred and understand the current state of food security of the Yanacona people. The primary data were collected through field work. Three food systems were identified between 1980 and 2015. The food system between 1980 and 1989 was characterized by production for self-consumption. The food system between 1990 and 1999 was marked by the replacement of agricultural production by poppy cultivation. From the year 2000 the food system is characterized by the search for food autonomy. Armed conflict and public policy have been identified as the determining factors in changing food systems. The study determined that there is food insecurity, but that the Yanacona people seek their food autonomy.Key Words: Yanaconas. Food Security. Food Systems. Armed Conflict. Food Autonomy. Colombia.

The precarious livelihood in waste dumps: a report on food insecurity and hunger among recyclable waste collectors

ObjectiveThis study estimated the prevalence of food insecurity, social vulnerability factors, and health risks in recyclable material collectors who work at the dump. MethodsA census was performed of the collectors' families living on five blocks near the dump of the Complementary Industry and Supply Sector, Brasília, Federal District, known as Cidade Estrutural. Sociodemographic data about sanitation, social programs, housing, labor, and food security were collected during home interviews. ResultsA total of 204 households composed of 835 residents and 286 collectors was studied. Ninety-three percent of the households had piped water, 65% had sanitation and almost all had electricity. But the presence of rats and cockroaches occurred in 90% of the households. A third of the workers reported being sick, but 44% of the families were not visited by community health workers because not all blocks were covered. Based on the food insecurity scale and the reporting of eating foods picked from the garbage by 55% of the respondents, a total of 75% of the households were exposed to food insecurity.
