Objective: To know the feelings and perceptions of women on the diagnosis of breast cancer. Methods: This is a qualitative study in Oncology Clinic of a university hospital, close to 11 women with breast cancer and aged between 43 and 58 years. Data collection was conducted through semi-structured interviews between May and July 2015. The data were analyzed and interpreted according to content analysis. Results: After analyzing four categories emerged: waiting for diagnosis; feelings aroused after diagnosis; family support; live and pray after the diagnosis of breast cancer. Conclusion: The study showed that women were waiting for the diagnosis of cancer, but even saying be prepared for such a diagnosis, at the news felt harassed, received family support and also sought religious support to face the difficult time of cancer diagnosis breast cancer. sentimientos despertaron después del diagnóstico; apoyo a la familia; vivir y orar después del diagnóstico de cáncer de mama. O tratamento para o câncer de mama pode gerar autoavaliações negativas da imagem corporal feminina, resultando em prejuízos nas relações interpessoais e afetivo-sexuais. Um elaborado repertório de habilidades sociais serve de fator de proteção ao favorecer o enfrentamento a estressores desencadeados pelo tratamento. O objetivo deste estudo foi analisar a percepção de imagem corporal e o repertório de habilidades sociais (HS) de mulheres com câncer de mama. Realizou-se uma pesquisa de delineamento descritivo e correlacional. Setenta mulheres em tratamento em instituições públicas maranhenses responderam, de forma voluntária e anônima, a três instrumentos: Protocolo de Caracterização Individual, Escala de Estima Corporal e Inventário de Habilidades Sociais. Os dados, analisados por meio de análises estatísticas descritivas e inferenciais, indicam que a amostra possui um bom repertório de HS; sentimentos neutros em relação a sua imagem corporal, exceto no fator sexualidade, onde apresentou sentimentos negativos médios; e uma correlação positiva e significativa (r = 0,238; p<0,05) entre os fatores “enfrentamento e auto-afirmação com risco” e “sexualidade”. Os dados não apoiaram estudos anteriores que sinalizam o comprometimento da imagem corporal dessas pacientes. Sem embargo, reforçam achados nacionais que um bom repertório de HS funciona como fator de proteção à insatisfação e baixa estima corporal.

Impact of the Effects of the Reconstructive Surgery in the Life of Women With Breast Cancer

This is a descriptive study which aimed to investigate the impact of the effects of reconstructive surgery in the life of women with breast cancer. Semistructured and audiorecorded, interviews were held with 14 women who had had mastectomies, who were registered in a rehabilitation center. Social Representation Theory was used for discussion of the data. Thematic analysis guided the analysis of the data. The categories which emerged from the interviews are related to the way in which the woman sees herself after the reconstruction, and what this meant in her life, and how she perceives its benefits and lives with the resulting limitations. The reconstruction of the breast, in some cases, allowed recovery of self-image and overcoming of the trauma caused by the disease. On the other hand, the postoperative complications gave rise to fear of further loss, fear of compromise in the sexual sphere, and fear in the perception of the reconstructed breast. The health team must offer appropriate information such that the woman may participate in the decisions regarding the operation.
