This is an exploratory study, of bibliographical type, which aimed to verify and characterize the literary production of nurses on the topic of alcoholism published in the Annals of the Brazilian Nursing Congress, published in the period of 1998-2008. The sample consisted of 99 abstracts that were directly related to the topic. The data were categorized according to the assumptions of content analysis and resulted in seven categories of analysis. It was evident that there was an increase in the production on the subject over the period of 1998-2008, and that the alcoholic patient care was the theme most researched by nurses. It was concluded that, despite the increase in production on the subject, it is still in its infancy, suggesting that other studies of this nature are needed in order to map the production of nursing published in the scientific events in the area.

“…Definition of the exam boards of every public service exam, as was specified in this one, had to be regulated by administrative acts in the form of decrees or ordinances, with prior appointment of the chairman, deputy chairman and other members, and making sure that the boards were always composed of experts in the field of the office to be filled. In this case, the exam board was composed of five members, including Marina Bandeira de Oliveira, 24 a nurse who was president of ABEn between April 1947 and July 1948, and José Paranhos Fontenelle, doctor of the National Department of Public Health and professor at the Ana Nery Nursing School, responsible for the first pedagogical studies based on intelligence tests. 25 Classification and final grade were based on the mean of the scores obtained, according to the order of score by weight: the practice test and proof of qualifications had weights of 2 each, and the written score had a weight of 1.…”

The aim of this study was to describe the primary norms and instructions for the first civil service exam for nurses administered by the Administrative Department of Public Service. This is a descriptive and historical-documentary study. Sources included publications about the event in the Diário Oficial da União, Brazil's Federal Official Gazette. Analysis and construction of results adhered to the sequence of presentation of norms and instructions of the process. Three were decrees that regulated the first civil service exam: two were generalized (n. 661 and n. 1411) and one was specialized (n. 1360). The specific instructions contained in the specialized decree were highlighted, and distributed in three chapters: I-Conditions; II-Exams; and III-Evaluations. In the Vargas Era, a substantial number of public servant positions for nurses were filled by way of public civil service exams administrated by the Administrative Department of Public Service, underpinned by rigorous normative structure, and translated into detailed selection criteria.

RESUMOO presente estudo teve como obje vo iden fi car as a vidades polí cas implementadas pela enfermagem gerontológica no Brasil, para sua consolidação como especialidade no atendimento ao idoso, no período de 1970 a 1996. Trata-se de um estudo descri vo-qualita vo, com abordagem histórica, que u liza a história oral temá ca e que se realizou com catorze enfermeiras pioneiras na área. As categorias encontradas são: 1. Organização polí ca da área; e 2. Relação da área com o Estado. Os resultados iden fi cam como exemplos de a vidades polí cas: a realização das jornadas brasileiras, com obje vo de agregar pesquisadores interessados na temá ca; criação do Departamento Cien fi co de Enfermagem Gerontológica; e a par cipação efe va da enfermagem na elaboração de polí cas públicas no país. A especialidade tem consciência da relevância polí ca para sua construção e vem empreendendo esforços para alcançar reconhecimento como área do conhecimento na equipe mul disciplinar de atendimento ao idoso.
