Spatial and temporal organization of aquatic insects assemblages in the longitudinal gradient of a tropical river

Abstract: The distribution and abundance of aquatic insects were studied in the longitudinal gradient of the watershed of Macaé River, a coastal Atlantic Forest river in South-eastern Brazil. Sampling stations were selected in the first, second, fourth, fifth, and sixth orders and sampled in April, July, and October 1995. This represented the end of the rainy season, the dry season, and the beginning of another rainy season, respectively. In each month four samples were collected using a Surber sampler from each of the … Show more

“…According to CCA results, main environmental variables which were effective on species distributions are salinity, electrical conductivity and water temperature. Our results are in line with many other studies which are about similar factors responsible of habitat preferences of aquatic insects (Shieh and Yang 2000;Baptista et al, 2001;Céspedes et al, 2013).…”

“…Spatial and temporal variability of environmental factors may determine the organization of communities of aquatic insects (BAPTISTA et al 2001). In this study, both spatial and temporal sources of variation were important for the structuring of the…”

“…A common pattern in comparative studies among mesohabitats in streams is the greater abundance and richness in riffle mesohabitats in relation to those of pools (UIEDA & GAJARDO 1996, BAPTISTA et al 2001, BUSS et al 2004. In the present study, which only considered EPT in litter, the obtained results corroborated the mentioned works.…”
