Diversity and structure of Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera and Trichoptera (Insecta) assemblages from riffles in mountain streams of Central Brazil

Abstract: Revista Brasileira de Zoologia 24 (2): 283-293, junho 2007The structure of the fauna of aquatic insects in lotic environments is directly related to geomorphology, hydrology, quality of water, quality and availability of food resources, dominant substratum, temperature and dissolved oxygen (VANNOTE et al. 1980, RICHARDS et al. 1993, ZAMORA-MUÑOZ et al. 1993, ZAMORA-MUÑOZ & ALBA TERCEDOR 1996, BISPO et al. 2006. Those characteristics vary in time and space; therefore, it is expected that those variation determ… Show more

“…These results emphasize that these mountainous regions of the state of São Paulo harbour a high diversity of aquatic insects, as demonstrated in several studies (Bispo and Oliveira, 2007;Spies and Froehlich, 2009;Siegloch, 2010). Thus, the high proportion of Coleoptera and other insects is possibly related to peculiarities of local conditions such as altitude and vegetation formations (Tropical and Mixed Rain Forest) and especially by the state of preservation of the regions concerned.…”

“…The high richness of Ephemeroptera found in this study is highlighted by comparison with other studies of different environments and regions of Brazil, based only on sampling nymphs (e.g., Crisci-Bispo et al 2007;Bispo & Oliveira 2007;Siegloch et al 2008;Righi-Cavallaro et al 2010). “…Food resources and climate conditions vary in space and time, directly affecting the diversity and distribution of insect populations (Morais et al 1999;Kittelson 2004;Bispo et al 2006;Bispo & Oliveira 2007;Goldsmith 2007). Climate is one of the determining factors in insect population fluctuations during the year (Wolda 1978;Torres & Madi-Ravazzi 2006).…”
