AIM: This study aimed provides a checklist of cladocerans and also an evaluation of richness and species composition in the Federal District, Brazil. METHODS: Checklist of cladocerans was obtained evaluating data from the literature, from taxonomic collection (Elmoor-Loureiro's collection) and from fauna surveys conducted over more than three decades in different types of aquatic environments. RESULTS: The 57 water bodies studied showed 56 species, of which 14 are new records. The number of species contained in the list displayed corresponds to 85% of what was expected for richness estimators. The highest number of species was observed in the lentic water bodies (52), which also presented the specific composition of fauna (R = 0.110; p = 0.016), possibly because there were samples taken among the aquatic vegetation. According to our understanding, some species may be subject to local extinctions because they inhabit water bodies located exclusively in urban areas, which can lead to a decline in richness. CONCLUSION: Thus, the results of this study can assist in monitoring aquatic environments and in selection of new areas for surveys of cladocerans in the Federal District.

The aim of this study was to identify patterns of vertical distribution of planktonic cladocerean populations throughout the diel cycle, during the low and high water periods, and its ecological implications for a black water Amazonian lake. Tupé Lake is a black water lake located near the Brazilian city of Manaus. A channel links the lake with the Negro River and its flood pulse. This study was performed in a low-water period (November 2005) and in a high-water period (June 2006). Samples were taken on a 24-hour cycle, every 4 hours and at each meter of the water column, using a Schindler-Patalas trap equipped with a 55µm size mesh. A total of 16 species were registered during the low water period, wherein Bosminopsis deitersi, Moina minuta, and Ceriodaphnia cornuta were the most abundant species. B. deitersi migrated to the bottom during the afternoon, while M. minuta, Moina reticulata, and Holopedium amazonicum remained at the bottom for the entire diel cycle. During the high-water period, a total of 18 species were observed, and B. deitersi, C. cornuta, and Diaphanosoma polyspina were the most abundant species. During both sampling periods, no pattern was detected for C. cornuta. Generally, vertical patterns of distribution were less evident in the high water period, due to the mixing of the lake.

-Described from a high-altitude lake in Peru, Bosmina huaronensis Delachaux, 1918 has been recorded in diverse kinds of water bodies in South and North America, suggesting that this species has high environmental tolerance and a wide niche breadth. The present study surveyed the occurrence records of B. huaronensis from 55 localities and, using multivariate analysis, investigated the niche differentiation among populations from different biogeographic regions, based on altitude and seven climatic variables. The first two principal components (PC) explained 73% of the overall variance. PC1 was related to annual mean temperature, precipitation of driest quarter, and annual precipitation. PC2 was related to temperature seasonality and precipitation of wettest quarter. The PCA diagram showed three population groups, occupying different climate niches: (1) tropical highlands; (2) Neotropical lowlands; (3) temperate zones of both hemispheres. These results point to the need for further evaluation of these populations under morphological, genetic and ecological aspects.
