The golden mussel, Limnoperna fortunei, is an Asian freshwater bivalve introduced in South America in the beginning of the 1990's, probably through ballast water releases in La Plata River estuary. It dispersed north through Paraná, Uruguay and Paraguay Rivers. The study evaluated the macroscale (18° to 34° S; 45° to 60° W) distribution of L. fortunei (larval stages) in the main rivers and reservoirs of La Plata Basin. Samplings were performed through 68 µm vertical plankton net hauls. Limnological variables were simultaneously determined. Larvae abundance correlated significantly with oxygen (positively) in summer, with temperature (positively) in winter and with total phosphorus and total nitrogen (both negatively) in winter. We expected densities to decrease towards north (latitudinal gradient) and increase in lentic conditions (reservoirs). Despite maximum density was found near the introduction point (La Plata River) similar value was also observed 2,000 km north (Paraguay River). The first hypothesis was refuted. The second hypothesis was partially accepted. Abundances were consistently higher in summer. Higher trophic conditions and fast flow seem to inhibit population growth. Food resources (chlorophyll a) locally influenced temporal variation. Limnoperna fortunei is widely distributed in La Plata basin, reaching high larval densities superior to 10,000 ind. m -3 , in all major sub-basins. O mexilhão dourado (Limnoperna fortunei) é um molusco bivalve de água doce pertencente à família Mytilidae. Originário do sudoeste asiático é considerado “praga” pela sua alta prolificidade e característica de aderir, por filamentos de bisso, em diversos materiais, formando aglomerados capazes de obstruir sistemas de filtragem, resfriamento e de tubulações de água. Na Usina hidrelétrica de Itaipu é motivo de preocupação desde o seu surgimento na Hidrelétrica de Yacyretá. Preventivamente, com base em orientações obtidas de um Seminário promovido em 2000, a Itaipu iniciou, em trecho a jusante e nas instalações da Hidrelétrica, um programa de monitoramento de larvas no reservatório para detectar a chegada da espécie. Após quatro meses, foram encontrados exemplares adultos fixados na câmara de serviço da comporta tomada d’água, dois a três indivíduos por metro quadrado, cuja colonização após um ano de acompanhamento já atingia aproximadamente 14.000 indivíduos/m2 chegando a 80.000 indivíduos/m2, densidade esta que vem oscilando desde então em torno de 40.000 indivíduos/m2. Diante disto, este artigo aborda a situação e monitoramento da ocorrência do molusco nas instalações da UHE Itaipu Binacional. Contudo, destaca-se que pesquisas para controle devem ser priorizadas e realizadas em paralelo com o monitoramento ambiental. O acompanhamento no interior da hidrelétrica desde a fase inicial de colonização é fundamental, pois permite conhecer a evolução do problema a tempo de serem evitados problemas operacionais e ambientais.

Opportunities and challenges for fish culture in Brazilian reservoirs: a review

Aim Aquaculture plays an important role in the world and in Brazil. Artificial construction of water bodies, such as ponds and reservoirs, has allowed for fish culture in cages in those environments, generating conflicts over the use of these public waters. The producers are seeking to increase production, and the ecosystem is susceptible to the impacts caused by production activity. The aim of this review was to identify questions about these conflicts (productivity × environment) and to indicate possible solutions to the main problems related to fish farming in reservoirs. Methods A bibliographical survey was carried out on the main aspects of cage fish farming in Brazilian reservoirs. Studies from 1977 to 2018 (scientific journals, books, and thesis) were revised using seven databases, the CAPES periodicals portal and Google Scholar websites. The main keywords used were “aquaculture”, “reservoir”, “cage”, “eutrophication”, “carrying capacity”, “impacts”, “oligotrophic”, “escapes”, “hybrids”, and “pollution”. Results We accessed approximately 330 and cited 151 documents. Conclusions The negative aspects associated with cage fish farming, as escapes of cultivated fish, and the possible solutions of this and others negative impacts were addressed, identifying mechanisms for reducing conflicts between environmental impacts and aquaculture production. Potential solutions include the use of native fish species or sterile species, implementation of monitoring systems of the surrounding area, adoption of measures to reduce the accidental escape of fish, use of multitrophic culture systems, use of highly digestible diets with appropriate food management, and use of computer programs that incorporate current and historical environmental data to calculate carrying capacity and choose the most appropriate location for production.
