Abstract: Objective: To evaluate retinol concentration in colostrum samples collected with a 24 hour interval. Methods: Colostrum was collected from 24 recently-delivered mothers at two points in time, 0 hours (T0) and 24 hours later (T24), and a pooled sample of colostrum from T0 and T24 was also analyzed. Fat content was determined by creamatocrit, and retinol assayed by high performance liquid chromatography. Results: When expressed in terms of volume of milk (µg/dL), retinol levels varied across T0, T24 and the pooled… Show more

“…The retinol concentration of colostrum milk was higher than that of breast milk, corroborating with previous research. 31,38,39 In colostrum milk, the basal levels of retinol in the population were comparable to those found in studies with women from the same region of Brazil (3.34 mmol/L), 40 Cuban women (3.56 mmol/L), 41 and lactating women in developed countries who had colostrum retinol above 3.49 mmol/L. 42,43 When we consider retinol expressed per grams of fat, the mean colostrum level also indicated satisfactory VA status in the population studied.…”

“…Procedures were adapted as described by Ribeiro et al. 17 for HM samples. Retinol concentrations ≤0.70 µmol/L in serum and ≤1.05 µmol/L in milk were considered insufficient.…”
