SUMMARYIn the subtropical regions of southern Brazil, rainfall distribution is uneven, which results in temporal variability of soil water storage. For grapes, water is generally available in excess and water deficiency occurs only occasionally. Furthermore, on the Southern Plateau of Santa Catarina, there are differences in soil properties, which results in high spatial variability. These two factors affect the composition of wine grapes. Spatio-temporal analyses are therefore useful in the selection of cultural practices as well as of adequate soils for vineyards. In this way, well-suited areas can produce grapes with a more appropriate composition for the production of quality wines. The aim of this study was to evaluate the spatio-temporal variability of water storage in a Cambisol during the growth cycle of a Cabernet Sauvignon vineyard and its relation to selected soil properties. The experimental area consisted of a commercial 8-year-old vineyard in São Joaquim, Santa Catarina, Brazil. A sampling grid with five rows and seven points per row, spaced 12 m apart, was outlined on an area of 3,456 m². Soil samples were collected with an auger at these points, 0.30 m away from the grapevines, in the 0.00-0.30 m layer, to determine gravimetric soil moisture. Measurements were taken once a week from December 2008 to April 2009, and every two weeks from December 2009 to March 2010. In December 2008, undisturbed soil samples were collected to determine bulk density, macro-and microporosity, and disturbed samples were used to quantify particle size distribution and organic carbon content. Results were subjected to descriptive analysis and semivariogram analysis, calculating the mean relative difference and the Pearson correlation. The average water storage in a Cambisol under grapevine on ridges had variable spatial dependence, i.e., the lower the average water storage, the higher the range of spatial dependence. Water storage had a stable spatial pattern during the trial period, indicating that the points with lower water storage or points with higher water storage during a certain period maintain these conditions throughout the experimental period. The relative difference is a simple method to identify positions that represent the average soil water storage more adequately at any time for a given area.Index terms: Cambisol, Vitis vinifera L., geostatistics, spatial variability, temporal variability. Este estudo foi realizado nos municípios de São Roque de Minas e Vargem Bonita, MG, com o objetivo de distinguir ambientes cultivados com cafeeiros quanto à disponibilidade hídrica para a cultura. A umidade de oito glebas de cafeeiro foi monitorada e em cinco delas determinadas a disponibilidade de água para as plantas e a densidade do solo. As glebas estão situadas em áreas de Latossolo e Cambissolo e em uma gleba de cada classe foi realizado estudo da distribuição do sistema radicular do café no perfil do solo. A umidade foi monitorada no período de abril de 2008 a fevereiro de 2009, com frequência de 30 a 40 dias, amostradas as profundidades de 0,2; 0,4; 0,8; 1,2 e 1,6 m nas posições linha e entrelinha da cultura. Observou-se que a umidade do solo é menor na linha da cultura em relação à entrelinha. A classe de solo e a idade da lavoura também influenciaram a umidade do solo e a disponibilidade de água para as plantas. O sistema radicular do cafeeiro atingiu a camada de 1,5 a 1,7 m de profundidade de ambas as classes de solo estudadas. Por meio da análise de componentes principais separaram-se os 50 tratamentos em 4 grupos referentes à classe de solo e ao manejo.

ABSTRACT:Soils with an A horizon formed by human activity, an anthropogenic A horizon, are found in the Amazon Region. Few studies have examined the spatial distribution of the properties of these soils. We mapped the spatial variability of some soil properties in an area of Archaeological Dark Earth (ADE) in the Brazilian Amazon. A sampling grid was defined over an area of 42 × 88 m under cacao cultivation in which sampling points were established at a spacing of 6 × 8 m, for a total of 88 points. Samples were collected from the 0.00-0.05, 0.05-0.10, 0.10-0.20, and 0.20-0.30 m depth layers. Soil texture, aggregate stability, and organic carbon (OC) analyses were performed on disturbed soil samples. Undisturbed samples were used to determine soil macroporosity (Macro), microporosity (Micro), total porosity (TP), and soil resistance to penetration (RP). The results were analyzed by descriptive statistic, Pearson correlation (p<0.01), and geostatistics. Soil bulk density, total pore volume, and geometric mean diameter are dependent on the total amount of OC in the ADE area. Increased soil bulk density and RP are proportional to a decrease in OC content and lower Micro and TP. Moreover, soil resistance to penetration is influenced by soil water and clay content with depth.
