Association of cytokines, neurological disability, and disease duration in HAM/TSP patients

Abstract: -Objective: To identify clinical and immunological markers associated with HTLV-I associated m y e l o p a t h y / t ropical spastic paraparesis (HAM/TSP). Method: 237 HTLV-I infected individuals were clinically assessed. They were classified according to the Expanded Disability Status Scale (EDSS) and Osame's Motor Disability Score (OMDS). Cytokine levels were determined in HTLV-I seropositive individuals. R e s u l t s : 37 patients had HAM/TSP. There was a correlation between the degrees of disability asses… Show more

“…In HAM/TSP disease, PSMB8 in associated with PSMB8, JAK2, STAT1, IFI35, IRF1, GBP2, IFITM1, HLA-B, ISG20, GBP5, SOCS1, BST2, IFNG, and UBE2L6 activate the Interferon Signaling pathway and Cytokine Signaling in Immune system. The importance of cytokines especially IFN-γ for the HAM ⁄TSP pathogenesis were previously reported [50, 51].…”

“…It is known that in TSP/HAM the key pathological event is an inflammatory demyelinating lesion in the spinal cord consequent upon immune mechanisms involving cytokines, such as IFN-γ and TNF-α 39,40 , and this may be expressed mainly in the beginning of the neurological symptoms, but also along the disease, declining, however, with the disease duration 41 . It is also clear that in inflammatory nociceptive and neuropathic pain, cytokines such as TNF-α, IL-1, IL-6 and IL-8 [16][17][18][19] are mainly implicated.…”
