Ischemic cerebral changes in the chronic chagasic cardiopathy

Abstract: The pathological systematized study of the brain of 31 cases of the chronic cardiac form of Chagas' disease was undertaken. Elective parenchymatous necrosis was found in 64.5% of cases, mainly in cerebellar Purkinje cells, and in thalamic nuclei. Also found were multiple foci of old micronecrosis (51.6%) mostly in the cerebral cortex, old cerebral infarcts (22.6%), cortical laminar necrosis (16.1%) and cerebral cortical atrophy (3.2%). These findings are not specific and can be explained by thromboembolic phen… Show more

“…Multiple studies [5, 6] have described a correlation between IS and Chagas disease. However, the epidemiology, etiology, prognosis, and factors associated with mortality and recurrence of IS in these cases remain poorly understood [2, 11, 23].…”

“…However, the epidemiology, etiology, prognosis, and factors associated with mortality and recurrence of IS in these cases remain poorly understood [2, 11, 23]. Although few studies have evaluated factors associated with cardioembolic etiology [2, 6, 9, 23], to our knowledge, ours is the first study to analyze factors associated with stroke recurrence and mortality outcomes.…”

“…A cerebral form of CD was initially suggested [3], but later refuted by other authors, attributing most brain involvement to cardioembolic stroke [6,9,10]. However, cases of active brain inflammation have been described in immune suppressed patients [10], and brain atrophy has been found pathologically [6].…”
