Transcutaneous Multichannel Electrogastrography: Normal Parameters in a Brazilian Population

Abstract: BACKGROUND: Electrogastrography (EGG) is a noninvasive technique for the assessment of gastric myoelectrical activity using electrodes placed on the abdominal surface. Changes in gastric myoelectrical activity may be associated with diseases such as gastroparesis, functional dyspepsia, nausea, and recurrent vomiting. In Brazil, no studies to date have assessed gastric myoelectrical activity using multichannel EGG in healthy individuals. OBJECTIVE: To establish normal values of transcutaneous multichannel EG… Show more

“…The influence of water-load testing on individuals with obesity has also been minimally investigated. Only a few studies have been conducted on the fed state, showing no significant difference in the dominant power after meals among healthy-weight adults [ 21 ] and obese children [ 22 ]. Furthermore, data on whether obesity impairs gastrointestinal motility are inconsistent, with some reports showing faster, unchanged, or delayed gastric emptying [ 18 , 23 , 24 ].…”
