Survival of Patients With Colorectal Cancer in a Cancer Center

Abstract: BACKGROUND: Hospital-based studies recently have shown increases in colorectal cancer survival, and better survival for women, young people, and patients diagnosed at an early disease stage. OBJECTIVE: To describe the overall survival and analyze the prognostic factors of patients treated for colorectal cancer at an oncology center. METHODS: The analysis included patients diagnosed with colon and rectal adenocarcinoma between 2000 and 2013 and identified in the Hospital Cancer Registry at A.C.Camargo Canc… Show more

“…As per recent estimates, approximately a million new colon cancer cases are reported worldwide every year, and about half of these patients die from the disease [ 2 ]. The five-year survival for CRC patients depends largely on the disease stage as it ranges from 90% for patients with localized disease (stage I) to ~10% when the tumor becomes distant and invasive, and spreads to distant organs (stage IV) [ 3 , 4 ]. The basis of the advanced CRC treatment consists primarily of chemotherapy; however, drug resistance remains a major hurdle [ 5 ].…”

“…Colorectal cancer (CRC) is one of the most common cancers of the digestive system, with the third highest incidence (10.0%) in the world, behind breast cancer (11.7%) and lung cancer (11.4%), and the second highest mortality (9.4%) in the world, only after lung cancer (18%) (106). Although traditional surgery combined with radiotherapy and chemotherapy has greatly improved the poor prognosis of colorectal cancer in recent years, the 5-year survival rate of colorectal cancer is still only 63.5%, and postoperative recurrence and liver metastasis of colorectal cancer are the main reasons for poor prognosis of patients with colorectal cancer (107,108). Therefore, the exploration of the pathogenesis of colorectal cancer has a very important strategic significance.…”

“…Colorectal cancer (CRC) has an increased incidence in both men and women [ 1 ]. If diagnosed at an early stage, it is associated with a good prognosis [ 2 ]. However, 20–25% of patients already have metastases at the time of diagnosis and about half of those diagnosed at an early stage will eventually develop metastatic disease [ 3 ].…”
