Factors associated with functional balance and mobility among elderly diabetic outpatients

Abstract: Objectives: To characterize balance and mobility among diabetic elderly outpatients and to estimate the extent to which functional balance and mobility abnormalities can be influenced by sociodemographic, clinical and other functional factors in a cross-sectional study. Methods: Ninety-one elderly (65+ years) outpatients were assessed. Mobility was evaluated by the Timed Up and Go Test (TUGT) and the balance, by the Berg Balance Scale (BS). Results: TUGT mean score was 15.65 ± 5.9 seconds and BS mean score was… Show more

“…With respect to age and daily activity, a positive and independent association with TUG has been observed 29 . This is consistent with the findings of the present study, in which an increase in daily activity, i.e., equine-assisted therapy, caused an increase in the agility of the elderly participants.…”

“…Em 2009, Cordeiro e cols. (20) avaliaram idosos (média de idade de 74,4 ± 5,9 anos) com DM2 utilizando o teste TUG. O tempo médio de execução foi de 15,7 ± 6,5 segundos, e a maioria dos pacientes (67,8%) levou um tempo entre 10 e 20 segundos e o restante (21,1%) levou mais de 20 segundos, mostrando que há piora importante desse aspecto em faixas etárias maiores.…”

“…[23] Furthermore; Lafond et al, 2004 reported that DPN aggravates the functional instability [10] and predispose to poor postural control during daily activities which is considered among major contributor and major intrinsic factor to fall [24] This increased risk of loss of functional balance among patients with DPN may be due to the direct effect of DPN on neuromuscular system or the compensatory strategies the body adopt due to lack of somatosensory inputs. [25] Comparisons between the two groups showed a very highly significant difference in the mean values of the overall scores of the postural stability and limits of stability tests(Biodex balance tests). These findings are supported by Arnold et al,1998 [26] who reported that theBiodex balance system provides information more specifically on ankle joint movements.…”
