Epidemiological and molecular mechanisms aspects linking obesity and cancer

Abstract: About 25% of cancer cases globally are due to excess weight and a sedentary lifestyle. These results are alarming, as the world knows a pandemy of obesity and, in consequence, insulin resistance. Obesity may increase risk for various cancers by several mechanisms, including increasing sex and metabolic hormones, and inflammation. Here, we present a review of epidemiological and molecular evidences linking obesity and cancer -particularly colorectal, postmenopausal breast, endometrial, pancreatic, high grade pr… Show more

“…However, for the association between the overweight and GBC risk, the pooled RR was 1. Both in developed countries and developing countries, obesity was considered to be a major public health challenge in men and women (70). A previous quantitative review by Polednak (71) showed the trends in estimated population attributable risk percent of GBC due to obesity.…”

“…According to this review, MLT levels are regulated by ipRGCs, which control the inhibition of the pineal hormone in response to short wavelength ALAN and consequently advance tumorigenesis mediated by epigenetic modification, such as DNA methylation. Considering the suggested association between obesity and the development of variant cancers [220], the suggested nexus between ALAN, MLT suppression, epigenetic modifications, and adverse health consequences [219] is of significant clinical importance.…”
