Restinga forests of the Brazilian coast: richness and abundance of tree species on different soils

Abstract: The aim of this study was to determine changes in composition, abundance and richness of species along a forest gradient with varying soils and flood regimes. The forests are located on the left bank of the lower Jucu River, in Jacarenema Natural Municipal Park, Espírito Santo. A survey of shrub/tree species was done in 80 plots, 5x25 m, equally distributed among the forests studied. We included in the sampling all individuals with >3.2 cm diameter at breast height (1.30 m). Soil samples were collected from th… Show more

“…Coastland dwarf forests are characterized by a rather different species composition, with a predominance of Clusia spp., Eugenia spp., Myrcia spp., and Myrsine spp. (Magnago et al 2012)abundance and richness of species along a forest gradient with varying soils and flood regimes. The forests are located on the left bank of the lower Jucu River, in Jacarenema Natural Municipal Park, Espírito Santo.…”

“…Costa Rica is dominated by primary and secondary tropical rain forests with sparse open clearings whereas Cardoso Island corresponds to a "resting" ecoregion (i.e., coastal vegetation located on nutrient-poor sand deposits; Magnago et al, 2012). Tank bromeliads are flowering plants that accumulate rainwater in their leaf rosettes creating an aquatic habitat-from a few milliliters up to several liters of water per plant-for a diverse community of macroinvertebrates (e.g., Diptera, Coleoptera, Haplotaxida, Ostracoda; Dézerald et al, 2013).…”

“…This vegetation is characterized by a mix of patches of mediumsized trees where the water table is near the surface, and shrub patches where the water table is deeper in the soil (Magnago et al 2012). Cardoso and Macae are restinga ecosystems, a type of coastal vegetation located on nutrient-poor sand deposits from the Quaternary period.…”
