A critical evaluation of coastal erosion in Rio Grande do Sul, Southern Brazil

Abstract: Evidences of coastal erosion in Rio Grande do Sul have been obtained by three methods: (a) analysis of the long-term morphodynamics and stratigraphy of coastal barriers, (b) annual shoreline mapping using the Differential Global Positioning System (DGPS), and (c) local beach profile measurements. The first method reflects coastal erosion as continuity of the geological evolution in the last 5 ka, taking place mainly along the southern half of gentle coastal projections. The second method represents a shorter t… Show more

“…The Rio Grande do Sul coast is especially sensitive to a waves impact because of its unconsolidated sedimentary sandy barrier known as one of the longest sandy barriers in the world (615 km long) with only two permanent discontinuities, namely in the Tramandaí and the Patos Lagoon inlets (Dillenburg et al, 2004). Rio Grande city, close to the Patos Lagoon mouth, has a national strategic port facility whereas Tramandaí city receives much of the oil by means of the local offshore buoy.…”

“…This region comprises about 100 freshwater lakes next to the Atlantic Ocean and long beaches bounded by a undulated barrier of migrating sandy dunes, generally oriented northeast to southwest (Dillenburg et al, 2004). The present study includes 18 coastal lakes located in the municipalities of Cidreira, Balneário Pinhal and Palmares do Sul in the northern and middle part of the coastal plain of Rio Grande do Sul ( Figure 1 and Table 1).…”

“…The systems I to III were originated during the Pleistocene and system IV in the Holocene (Schwarzbold and Schäfer, 1984;Villwock et al, 1986;Tomazelli and Villwock, 2000;Dillenburg et al, 2004). Due to its origin, the coastal lakes of Rio Grande do Sul are characterized by their low depth.…”
