The Botrychiopsis genus and its biostratigraphic implications in Southern Paraná Basin

Abstract: Botrychiopsis has been considered an important floristic element of Westphalian/Artinskian associations of the Paraná Basin. The occurrence of Botrychiopsis in roof-shales of the Rio Bonito Formation in Southern Paraná Basin (Quitéria area), supported by the identification of Botrychiopsis valida, enlarges the genus biochron. Consequently, the stratigraphic hierarchy for Botrychiopsis plantiana and Botrychiopsis valida was defined for the Paraná Basin. Although it is climatically controlled and related to a de… Show more

“…At the Quitéria outcrop, prostrate, subhorizontal, and horizontal plant fragments, including large sterile shoots, fertile shoots, and fronds, occur among the erect lycophyte casts (Jasper et al, 2003). The presence of Botrychiopsis valida in this megaflora enlarged the biochron of the genus.…”

“…This exposure provides a rare look at the short-term spatial heterogeneity in contemporaneous deposits. For stratigraphic details see Piccoli et al (1991), Guerra-Sommer (1998, 1999) and Jasper et al (2003).…”

“…The plant assemblage here studied is included, by Jasper et al (2003), in the Botrychiopsis Zone/ Botrychiopsis valida Sub-zone (Artinskian/Kungurian Interval). This age are confirmed by CazzuloKlepzig et al (2002) with zircon radiometric dating of volcanic rocks interbedded in coal seams of Rio Bonito Formation in Southernmost Paraná Basin.…”
