Responding to contemporary global challenges will require quality education, which presupposes changes in schools’ organizational structures, new roles and mentalities for the players involved and a culture of learning at the different levels of organizations. In this regard, we strive to understand how changing certain organizational structures, more specifically the organization of teaching by educational teams operating as professional learning communities, can have an impact on individual, collective and organizational learning at schools. To this end, we have adopted a qualitative research paradigm, put into operation through a case study, based on a qualitative-quantitative approach. We combined a descriptive statistical approach consisting of two questionnaires, which have been decoded and interpreted both structurally and semantically, with a content analysis of interviews, focused discussion groups and field diary notes, to examine a number of unique contexts and the perspectives of individual players. We concluded that a change in organizational structures is an essential but insufficient condition. What is needed is a change in the players’ beliefs and collaboration that provides deep learning. As such, a substantial change in education at the level of educational organization requires joint action at the levels of structure, middle leadership, beliefs and professional cultures.

Purpose: This study aims to analyze the impact of organizational culture, cultural types, and cultural strength on school effectiveness, as the literature has demonstrated that social processes within schools influence academic outcomes. Prior research highlights the significance of culture in school effectiveness. However, this topic has not been extensively explored, necessitating a closer examination of various organizational cultures and the strength of these cultures. Method: These relationships were investigated using the population of schools in the Colombian coffee region. A total of 698 instructors, along with school boards from 25 educational institutions at the primary, middle, and high school levels, were involved. A regression analysis was conducted to test the hypotheses. Results: The findings suggest that organizational culture and cultural strength have a significant influence on school effectiveness, with the levels of cultural strength corresponding to the levels of school effectiveness. However, no evidence was found of differences in impact based on cultural typology. Clan and hierarchical cultures, which have an internal orientation and are the most prevalent in Colombian organizations, exhibited a greater number of positive and significant relationships. Conclusions: School boards should familiarize themselves with the norms, values, and customs prevalent in educational institutions, particularly those that align most closely with their objectives. This can lead to improvements in school effectiveness and, consequently, educational quality.

As organizações escolares viram a sua atividade fortemente abalada com a recente crise pandêmica. Marcada por uma estrutura tradicionalmente centralizada e burocrática, a gestão escolar em Portugal confrontou-se com dilemas inéditos, que exigiram soluções rápidas e uma capacidade permanente de reinvenção organizacional, profissional, pedagógica e didática. Perante este cenário, de que modo a organização escolar reagiu ao súbito confinamento? Que ruturas emergiram e que continuidades perduraram para além da crise pandêmica? Este artigo discute os efeitos destas turbulências ao nível da organização escolar, mobilizando para o efeito resultados de algumas pesquisas empíricas realizadas em Portugal durante o período pandêmico. A abordagem reflete sobre os desafios colocados à gestão escolar em tempos marcados pela incerteza, imprevisibilidade e risco, concluindo com a ideia de que o abalo da estrutura escolar provocado pela pandemia abriu novas brechas no sistema que poderão ser criativamente usadas pela gestão escolar em prol da democratização.
