IL-6, TNF-α, and IL-10 levels/polymorphisms and their association with type 2 diabetes mellitus and obesity in Brazilian individuals

Abstract: Objective: This study aimed to investigate the association of plasma TNF-α, IL-6, and lL-10 levels and cytokine gene polymorphisms , and IL-10 (-1082 A→G, -819 T→C and -592 A→C)] in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and obese patients. Subjects and methods: One hundred and two T2DM patients and 62 controls were included in this study. Cytokine plasma levels were measured by the Cytometric Bead Array method. Genotyping was carried out by the polymerase chain reaction. Results: IL-6 levels were significantly diff… Show more

“…In the present study, levels of proinflammatory cytokines such as TNF‐alpha, IL‐6 and anti‐inflammatory cytokine IL‐10 were significantly higher in T2DM individuals compared to controls. Similar results have been reported in T2DM patients from other countries 17‐21 . However, some study reported that there was no significant difference in TNF‐alpha, 22 IL‐6, 23 and IL‐10 24 between T2DM and controls.…”

“…In a study of 120 Caucasian Italian women no AA homozygotes were recognized and the frequency of A allele was 27.4% [90]. The frequency of AA genotype was about 4% among Han Chinese [91], 2% among people with obesity from Spain [92], and 0.6% in the Brazilian individuals [93]. In GG homozygotes higher plasma levels of TNF-α and CRP-hs than in AA homozygotes [94][95][96][97] as well as in GA heterozygotes of the G-308A polymorphism in the TNF-α gene were reported [90].…”

“…Correspondingly, this study only recorded a mild correlation between these cytokines (R = −0.656). Similarly, other studies have reported their contrasting properties regarding insulin resistance (Daniele et al 2014;Rodrigues et al 2017).…”
