Temporal trend of drought and aridity indices in semi-arid pernambucano to determine susceptibility to desertification

Abstract: ABSTRACT In semi-arid regions, the use of drought and aridity indices in order to establish diagnoses and prognoses that help in water resources management is crucial, above all, for the evaluation of long-term water availability, and monitoring hydrological extreme events. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the trends of extreme events to determine susceptibility to desertification in the Brígida river basin, by Drought (RAI, SPI and PDSI) and Aridity (MIA, AI and AIASD) Indices. The res… Show more

“…No semiárido, parte dos afluentes do Médio e do Submédio São Francisco apresentam regime de escoamento intermitente, o que leva à dinâmica de transporte de materiais e de diluição de cargas diferente das dos rios de escoamento perene. De acordo com os dados históricos, ocorreram 124 períodos de seca nos últimos quatro séculos, sendo grande parte destes eventos ligados ao fenômeno atmosférico oceânico El Niño (Silva & Azevedo, 2020).…”

“…Every day, the arid and semi-arid regions of the world have aroused more concern looks because they have rainfall and irregularities deficiency, high temperatures and evapotranspiration (Parihar et al, 2015;Ongom et al, 2016;Silva & Azevedo, 2020), which make these regions present a considerable water restriction precisely in times of drought.…”

“…This region is characterized by poor distribution of rainfall and high evaporation rates. Due to these characteristics and the scarce rainfall, water sources are considered insufficient in these regions (2) . Despite high levels of soluble salts in water resources in semi-arid regions, in the absence of other sources, brackish and saline water represent the only alternative to be used by farmers both for irrigation and for watering herds (3) .…”
