Multicriteria analysis applied to the management of urban pluvial waters

Abstract: The urbanization process significantly changes natural drainage processes within a river basin, for instance with the increase of volume of rainwater drained superficially it also increases the peak flows of water bodies, degradation of the water quality, and the sediment generation, among others. Rainwater drainage management plays a key role in urban areas, becoming increasingly complex, involving not only hydrological and hydraulic aspects, but also environmental, social and health issues, as well as other … Show more

“…Therefore, a numerical system could be used to represent effectiveness, i.e., the ratings 'most important', 'more important', 'important', 'less important', 'not important' are converted to the numbers 5, 4, 3, 2, and 1 respectively. This rating was used to quantify the quantitative indicators [39]. The numbers only present the relative scores of various LID alternatives.…”

“…Linkov et al (2007) applied a Stochastic Multiobjective Acceptability Analysis III (SMAA III) approach of MCDA to the analysis of a suite of metrics to gauge response to an oil spill and to deal with assessment of the contaminated site (Linkov et al , ). Araújo et al () used a multicriteria analysis to deal with complex urban rainwater drainage issues. The analysis was expanded to include environmental, social, health, and other technical issues, rather than just hydrological and hydraulic aspects.…”

“…Multicriteria decision analysis enables the application of theoretical scientific approaches to decisions in multicriteria problems (Linkov et al ). It can help decision makers choose the best option between two or more decision alternatives (Araújo et al ). Normally, the several steps for MCDA are identifying objectives, identifying options for achieving the objectives, identifying the criteria used to compare alternatives, analyzing the alternatives, making choices, and providing or receiving feedback (Department for Communities and Local Government ).…”
