A new approach towards the so-called recalcitrant seeds

Abstract: Water is essential, irreplaceable, and indispensable for any kind of carbon-based-life metabolic activity. Water-dependent living beings are the expected pattern in nature. However, some organisms can survive for some time at a minimum water content, such as seeds of some species (orthodox seeds). Nevertheless, the expected standard life behavior is found in seeds of another group of species, the so-called recalcitrant seeds, which are sensitive to desiccation. A huge range of different behaviors can be found … Show more

“…The initial moisture content of the peach palm seeds (before testing) was 44.9%, which confirms the recalcitrant behavior of the species (Bovi et al, 2004;Barbedo, 2018). This value is higher than the critical moisture content of 38.0% defined by Ferreira and Santos (1992), therefore indicating that the seeds were apt for the experiment.…”

“…On the other hand, desiccation-sensitive seeds (recalcitrant) often have high WC and do not tolerate desiccation, losing viability quickly below 0.25 g H 2 O.g -1 dw. This dichotomy, however, is now only appropriate for technological purposes, given the vast range of different behaviors that can be found within these two groups (Barbedo et al, 2013;Barbedo, 2018). For example, some species of the genus Garcinia were classified as being recalcitrant and dormant (Liu et al, 2005;Anegbeh et al, 2006).…”
