Biometric description of fruits and seeds, germination and imbibition pattern of desert rose [Adenium obesum (Forssk.), Roem. & Schult.]

Abstract: This study has aimed to carry out the description of fruits and seeds and germination process of desert rose, from two years of observations. The fruits and seeds were characterized based on length, diameter and number of seeds per fruit. The seeds internal structure and germinating process were also described. Germination test was performed at 25 and 30 °C temperatures, determining the germination percentage and germination speed index. Seeds harvested in 2013 were stored for 12 months and submitted to a new … Show more

“…According to Colombo et al (2015), seeds with bigger mass present better germination capacity, standardization and seedling emergence, which is a result of the evaluated biometric characteristics; the fresh mass of fruits with the fresh mass of seeds had a direct and strong relation with the germination average time (Table 4). Based on the results obtained in this research, it is possible to deduce that the bigger the fruit fresh mass is, the bigger the seed mass will be.…”

“…A. obesum propagation is performed mainly by seeds, since the plants originating from seeds exhibit more swollen caudex and primary roots than those propagated from cuttings (COLOMBO et al, 2015).…”

“…According to Colombo et al (2015) the A. obesum follicles may present measures varying between 15.1 to 25.1 cm for length and 11.1 to 15.5 for central diameter, with the number of seeds varying from 28 to 118 seeds per follicle.…”

“…Allied to the potential of market expansion and to the search for differentiated products, Adenium obesum, popularly known as desert rose, is on a leading place in national scenario. It is a plant cultivated in pots and appreciated for developing swollen roots and/or shoots that serve as primary organs for water storage, and for presenting a variety of flowers shades and forms (Dimmitt et al, 2009;Brown, 2012;Colombo et al, 2015;Colombo et al, 2017).…”
