Color stability of resin composites for orthodontic attachments: an in vitro study

Abstract: Objective: The aim of the present study was to evaluate the color stability of Filtek Z350 XT, Filtek Z250 XT, Z100 resin composites and Transbond XT orthodontic resin, all used in orthodontic attachments, when immersed in popular beverages. Methods: Thirty disk-shaped specimens of each resin composite (2 x 5mm) were manufactured and randomly divided into six groups according to immersion solutions: coffee, red wine, white wine, regular beer, dark beer and deionized water (control). The specimens were fully … Show more

“…Similar to Red Bull, beer yielded relatively low ΔE* values, placing it among the solutions with minimal color change. These results align with existing literature ( Chami et al, 2022 , Sarembe et al, 2022 ). Coconut water, like beer, exhibited minimal staining.…”

“…Even though the color was not completely stable, there was only a slight, clinically acceptable change (∆E* < 3.7) in all bracket brands in the control group, which is in correlation with previous studies [13,23]. Regarding adhesives, Transbond™ XT samples in the control group showed clinically acceptable color change, which is in accordance with a study by Chami et al [25].…”

“…The staining potential of the adhesives depends on their composition, surface properties [ 14 , 21 ] and hydrophilicity [ 36 ]. The more hydrophilic the resin, the greater the absorption of water and water-soluble pigments [ 18 , 25 , 36 ]. The color stability of esthetic brackets depends not only on the manufacturing process as mentioned earlier, but also on the surface properties and morphology—size, shape, and thickness of the brackets [ 11 , 13 , 22 , 35 ].…”
