A variety of metals and alloys are employed in the field of orthodontics, of which the construction of wires happens to be predominant. Through this systematic review, our primary goal was to review and assess studies focusing on complications that emerged during or directly after the completion of an orthodontic treatment plan. We then used a meta-analysis to determine how these complications affected the patients who were receiving orthodontic treatment. A total of 634 documents were discovered after a thorough search of online journals, and 416 of the papers were initially selected. In the end, 14 papers, including in vitro experiments, literature reviews, comparative analyses, observational studies, and retrospective studies, were chosen that met the requisite inclusion and exclusion criteria. There were difficulties related to orthodontic treatment in all of the studies listed in our systematic review, but their severity varied greatly. The effects of gingival mucosa and root resorption were two of the most often mentioned periodontal problems in this review. More long-term studies are required to confirm the involvement of an orthodontic component in these issues, but the majority of the complications were assessed to initially arise after the treatment plan had begun and to resolve with time.

Aim: To determine the difference in the reflected color coordinates and to compare the translucency and opacity of different as-received ceramic brackets using a spectrophotometer. Materials and Methods: Four types of ceramic brackets were investigated in this in vitro study. A total of 72 ceramic brackets were examined using a spectrophotometer. Reflected color coordinates of the labial side of bracket were measured according to the Commission Internationale de l’Eclairage (CIE) color scale. Color difference between brackets was calculated using the equation: Δ E*ab = [(Δ L*)2 + (Δ a*)2 + (Δ b*)2] 1/2. Translucency parameter (TP) and opalescence parameter (OP) were calculated to determine translucency and opacity of the brackets, respectively. Data was collected and analyzed using IBM SPSS V25. The significance level was set at p ≤ .05. One-way ANOVA and post hoc multiple comparison tests were utilized. Results: The range for CIE L* (lightness) was 62.69 to 58.83, for a* (red–green parameter) −0.33 to −2.9 and for b* (yellow–blue parameter) −2.19 to 2.29. All these color co-ordinates were influenced by bracket brand ( p < .05). DISCREET™ showed the highest TP = 16.342 and Symetri™ Clear showed the lowest = 10.823. The OP values ranged between 1.783 and 3.781 and Symetri™ Clear showed the highest OP. Conclusion: Color coordinates, TP, and OP of esthetic brackets investigated with a spectrophotometer were significantly different and influenced by the material microstructure and/or manufacturing process.

Shear Bond Strength and Color Stability of Novel Antibacterial Nanofilled Dental Adhesive Resins

Experimental adhesives containing co-doped metaloxide nanoparticles were demonstrated to display strong and long-term antibacterial properties against Streptococcus mutans biofilms. The present study represents an effort to characterize the shear-bond strength (SBS) and color stability (CS) of these novel biomaterials. Experimental adhesives were obtained by dispersing nitrogen and fluorine co-doped titanium dioxide nanoparticles (NF_TiO2, 10%, 20% or 30%, v/v%) into OptiBond Solo Plus (OPTB). Dentin surfaces were wet-polished (600-Grit). Specimens (n = 5/group) of Tetric EvoCeram were fabricated and bonded using either OPTB or experimental (OPTB + NF_TiO2) adhesives. Specimens were stored in water (37 °C) for twenty-four hours (T1), three months (T2), and six months (T3). At T1, T2, or T3, specimens were removed from water storage and were tested for SBS. Disc-shaped specimens (n = 10/group; d = 6.0 mm, t = 0.5 mm) of adhesives investigated were fabricated and subjected to thermocycling (10,000 cycles, 5–55 °C, 15 s dwell time). Specimens’ colors were determined with a VITA EasyshadeÒ V spectrophotometer (after every 1000 cycles). SBS data was analyzed using two-way ANOVA and post-hoc Tukey tests, while CS data was analyzed using one-way ANOVA and post-hoc Tukey tests (α = 0.05). Mean values of SBS ranged from 16.39 ± 4.20 MPa (OPTB + 30%NF_TiO2) to 19.11 ± 1.11 MPa (OPTB), from 12.99 ± 2.53 MPa (OPTB + 30% NF_TiO2) to 14.87 ± 2.02 (OPTB) and from 11.37 ± 1.89 (OPTB + 20% NF_TiO2) to 14.19 ± 2.24 (OPTB) after twenty-four hours, three months, and six months of water storage, respectively. Experimental materials had SBS values that were comparable (p > 0.05) to those from OPTB independently of nanoparticle concentration or time-point considered. Experimental materials with higher NF_TiO2 concentrations had less intense color variations and were more color stable than OPTB even after 10,000 thermocycles. In combination, the results reported have demonstrated that experimental adhesives can establish strong and durable bonds to human dentin while displaying colors that are more stable, thereby suggesting that the antibacterial nanotechnology investigated can withstand the harsh conditions within the oral cavity without compromising the esthetic component of dental restorations.
