Effect of orthodontic treatment on alveolar bone thickness in adults: a systematic review

Abstract: Objectives: This review aimed at evaluating changes in alveolar bone thickness after completion of orthodontic treatment. Methods: Only prospective clinical studies that reported bone thickness in adult patients undergoing non-surgical orthodontic treatment were considered eligible. MEDLINE, EMBASE and LILACS databases were searched for articles published up to July 2018. Results: A total of 12 studies met the selected criteria. Most of the studies showed that orthodontic treatment produces a reduction in b… Show more

“…Bone dehiscences and fenestrations may develop or even worsen when iatrogenic orthodontic treatment is performed in the presence of periodontal inflammation [1][2][3][4][5][6]. Amount of bone density around the dental root as well as the position of the root apex are major anatomical landmarks in the planning of root torque movements [1,3,[7][8][9][10][11][12].…”

“… 5 - 9 Evaluation of the alveolar bone condition before orthodontic treatment and adequate biomechanical control of tooth movement are factors contributing to the prevention of alveolar defects. 9 - 11 In this regard, cone-beam computed tomography is a gold-standard diagnostic modality used to evaluate the periodontal condition as well as osseous and tegumentary tissues, particularly in adult patients. 9 , 12 …”

“…[5][6][7][8][9] Evaluation of the alveolar bone condition before orthodontic treatment and adequate biomechanical control of tooth movement are factors contributing to the prevention of alveolar defects. [9][10][11] In this regard, cone-beam computed tomography is a gold-standard diagnostic modality used to evaluate the periodontal condition as well as osseous and tegumentary tissues, particularly in adult patients. 9,12 In humans, orthodontic tooth movement toward the center of the alveolar process with the use of conventional appliances has reportedly resulted in complete or partial regeneration of the buccal bone plate and a consequent reduction in GR.…”
