Background: The relationship of people with natural resources is guided by different socio-cultural, ecological and evolutionary factors. Regarding food plants, it is not different. Studies around the world have evaluated the effects of socioeconomic factors, such as age, gender, income, profession, education level, time of residence, ethnic diversity, religion, festive rituals, access to urban areas and migrations. In this sense, the objective of the present study was characterize the diversity of knowledge and use of food plants by people from Serra dos Morgados and evaluate if the socioeconomic factors influence knowledge and consumption of food plants in the community. Methodology: This research was conducted in the village of Serra dos Morgados, municipality of Jaguarari, Bahia, with the purpose of evaluating the factors that influence in the knowledge and use of food plants. Socioeconomic data such as age, gender, time of residence, and monthly income were collected. The free list technique was applied during the collection of ethnobotanical data in order to analyze the preference of the plants based on the salience index (SI). To analyze the factors that influence knowledge and use forms, we used GLM Lasso. Results: A total of 33 people were interviewed, 8 men and 25 women, their age ranged from 30 to 82 years. People cited 93 ethnospecies of plants, of these 41 species of spontaneous occurrence. The plant with the highest salience index (SI) was cheirosa (Psidium ganevii) (SI = 0.5679), followed by massaranduba (Manilkara sp.) (SI = 0.4323); araça (Psidium sp.) (SI = 0.3320); cambuí (Myrcia sp.) (SI = 0.3144). Conclusions: The main factors that influence knowledge and use forms in the locality, were family income and the collection site, with homegardens cited as the preferred area for collection of food plants. This study provided an overview related to potentially important species for a community located in a region where there are few ethnobiological studies. The results presented here can be used in future studies, providing clues for investigations. the ethnoculinary and nutritional aspects of food plants. Also, there is a contributes to the conservation of biocultural aspects related to the use of food plants in a community living in mountainous regions

O araçazeiro é uma fruteira nativa do Brasil, pertencente à família Myrtaceae, podendo ser encontrada desde o Estado do Rio Grande do Sul, passando por Minas Gerais, até a região Nordeste. São muitas espécies de araçá, mas dependendo da região existem diferentes interesses em realizar estudos quanto a sua caracterização, ressaltando que essa fruta possui excelentes características físico-químicas, grande potencial econômico e podem ser consideradas imprescindíveis na regeneração de áreas degradadas. Essas características dos frutos tornam o araçazeiro uma nova e promissora opção de cultivo, trazendo benefícios aos consumidores e tornando-se uma alternativa para a exploração sustentada para os pequenos produtores rurais. O beneficiamento dos frutos nativos como araçá atende a crescente interesse industrial por produtos exóticos, além de ser extremamente aceito pelos consumidores. Quanto aos frutos de araçá existentes na Floresta do Araripe; não foram encontradas informações na literatura, relativas aos parâmetros físicos e químicos, sendo assim objetivou-se determinar as características físico-químicas (SS, pH, AT, SS/AT, açúcares redutores e não-redutores) e as características físicas como: massa do fruto inteiro, massa da polpa, rendimento de polpa. Dos resultados obtidos para araçá foi possível verificar que devido seu baixo grau de doçura não possui grande aceitação para consumo do fruto in natura. Apresenta potencial para industrialização e um dos fatores que contribuem é a uniformidade de formato, levemente arredondado, bom rendimento em polpa, baixo pH e elevadas concentrações de acidez.

Araçá has economic potential due to its fruits for consumption in natura or as feedstock for the food industry in Brazil. Despite the economic interest, there are few works in the literature and they conflict regarding araçá seed dormancy and procedures to overcome it, which could be a necessary requisite for large-scale production of this species. This work aimed to verify the existence of seed dormancy in fresh-collected red and yellow araçá seeds and, if dormancy exists, determine a possible dormancy release procedure for this species. The applied seed dormancy release treatments were: chemical scarification with concentrated sulfuric acid, thermal shock with hot water, chemically induced germination with gibberellic acid, a combination of sulfuric acid and gibberellic acid treatments, a combination of hot water and gibberellic acid treatments, and a control. The seeds were kept incubated in a BOD incubator for 60 days at 25±2 °C and a photoperiod of 16 h light and 8 h dark. The percentage of germination and the germination speed index (GSI) were evaluated. The data underwent ANOVA, followed by Tukey's multiple range test at 5% probability. After 60 days of incubation, no treatment was statistically different from the controls for red and yellow araçá seeds. indicating that both red and yellow araçá fresh-collected seeds do not have dormancy. Thus, there is no need for dormancy overcoming treatment, saving time and costs in seedling production of this species.
