Melanoxylon brauna is a tree species native to the Atlantic Forest of high ecological and economic value. The objective of this study was to evaluate the growth and nutritional status of seedlings of two Melanoxylon brauna cultivars grown in substrate with different controlled-release fertilizer doses (CRF). The experiment was arranged in a randomized block 4 × 2 factorial design, with four CRF doses (0, 2, 4, and 8 kg m -3 ) and two seed origins (Viçosa-MG and Linhares-ES), with four replicates and 126 seedlings per plot. At 60, 90, and 120 days after emergence, seedlings were collected to measure variables related to emergence, growth, and nutrition. The greatest growth and best nutritional status were found for seedlings originated from seeds collected in Linhares at CRF dose of 8 kg m -3 . On the other hand, seedlings originated from seeds collected in Viçosa showed low emergence and high plant mortality.

RESUMOAs florestas urbanas são componentes significativos da paisagem, imprescindíveis para a conservação da biodiversidade nas cidades. O objetivo do estudo foi analisar a estrutura fitossociológica da regeneração arbórea em um pequeno fragmento urbano de floresta estacional semidecidual (2 ha) em Juiz de Fora, MG. Foram alocadas 25 parcelas de 5 x 5 m em que foram amostrados todos os indivíduos com o diâmetro na altura do peito (DAP) < 5 cm e altura > 1 m. Foram amostrados 1066 indivíduos pertencentes a 71 espécies, com forte predomínio de pioneiras (47% da riqueza e 69% da densidade). As espécies mais representativas foram Myrcia splendens, Anadenanthera colubrina, Miconia urophylla, Vismia guianensis e a exótica invasora Syzygium jambos que, juntas, somaram 40,5% do VI total. O índice de diversidade de Shannon foi 3,17 nats ind -1 e o índice de equabilidade de Pielou 0,74, sinalizando a existência de dominância ecológica. A análise de correspondência segmentada (DCA) detectou a presença de forte gradiente florístico associando espécies utilizadas preteritamente para sombreamento (Anadenanthera colubrina e Piptadenia gonoacantha) com a exótica Coffea arabica. Apesar dos seus 70 anos de regeneração natural, os resultados indicaram uma comunidade regenerante com dificuldades de avanço sucessional.Palavras-chave: diversidade, floresta secundária, floresta urbana, invasão biológica Phytosociology of natural regeneration of an urban semideciduous forest fragment (ABSTRACT Urban forests are an important component of the landscape, being responsible for the conservation of biodiversity in the cities. This study aimed to analyse the phytosociological structure of regenerating tree species in a small urban (2 ha) semideciduous seasonal forest fragment at Juiz de Fora, MG, Brazil. The survey was done on 25 plots of 5 x 5 m, where all the individuals with diameter at breast height (DBH) < 5 cm and height > 1 m were sampled. The number of individuals found was 1066, belonging to 71 species with the predominance of 'pioneiras' (47% of species and 69% of individuals). The most representative species were Myrcia splendens, Anadenanthera colubrina, Vismia guianensis, Miconia theizans and the exotic invasive Syzygium jambos, which together amounted 40.5% of the total value of importance. The Shannon diversity index was 3.17 nats. ind -1 and Pielou equability index was 0.74, indicating the existence of an ecological dominance. The detrended correspondence analysis (DCA) detected the presence of strong floristic gradient, associating some shading species (Anadenanthera colubrina and Piptadenia gonoacantha) with exotic Coffea arabica. Even with 70 years of natural regeneration, the results indicated a regenerating community with difficulties of progression to advanced successional stages.

Community Succession in an Urban Novel Forest after Four Decades of Regeneration

This study aimed to analyse the tree community of an urban forest with 40 years of natural regeneration after abandonment of the degraded land. We hypothesized that after four decades of forest succession, the diversity, structure and functional aspects of the community would be similar to other secondary surrounding forests. We established ten plots (20x 20m), where all trees with DBH ≥ 5 cm were sampled. The inventory included 605 trees (1513 ind.ha-1) distributed across 25 species. The diversity index (H' = 0.92) and basal area (10.43 m 2 .ha-1) were lower than in surrounding forests. The results showed a great dominance of Eremanthus erythropappus with consequent delay in successional advance, and low potential of attraction of fauna, which suggests the need for management to control its population. Understanding the functioning of novel urban forests and discussing these neglected ecosystems is fundamental to guide management actions for both human and ecosystem prosperity.
