Introduction: Neotropical seasonally dry forest (NSDF) climatic constraintsincreased endemism, and phylogenetic niche conservatism in species that are restricted to thisbiome. NSDF have a large number of endemic Capparaceae taxa, but it is unknown ifphylogenetic niche conservatism has played a role in this pattern. Objective: We carried out anevolutionary analysis of the climatic niche of neotropical species of Capparaceae to identifywhether the climatic constraints of NSDF have played a major role throughout the family’sevolutionary history. Methods: Using three chloroplastic (ndhF, matK, rbcL) and one ribosomal(rsp3) DNA sequences, we proposed a date phylogeny to reconstruct the evolutionary climaticniche dynamics of 24 Neotropical species of Capparaceae. We tested the relationship betweenniche dissimilarity and phylogenetic distance between species using the Mantel test. Likewise,we used a set of phylogenetic comparative methods (PGLS) on the phylogeny of Capparaceae toreconstruct the main evolutionary historic events in their niche. Results: Capparaceae originatedin humid regions and subsequently, convergent evolution occurred towards humid and dry forestduring the aridification phases of the Middle Miocene (16-11 Mya). However, adaptationtowards drought stress was reflected only during the precipitation of the coldest quarter, wherewe found phylogenetic signal (Pagel ) for gradual evolution and, therefore, evidence ofphylogenetic niche conservatism. We found convergent species-specific adaptations to bothdrought stress and rainfall during the Miocene, suggesting a non-phylogenetic structure in mostclimatic variables. Conclusions: Our study shows how the Miocene climate may haveinfluenced the Capparaceae speciation toward driest environments. Further, highlights thecomplexity of climatic niche dynamics in this family, and therefore more detailed analyses arenecessary in order to better understand the NSDF climatic constrictions affected the evolution ofCapparaceae.

ResumoCapparaceae compreende 25 gêneros e aproximadamente 500 espécies de ampla distribuição no mundo, ocorrendo especialmente nas regiões tropicais e subtropicais, estando bem representada em florestas tropicais sazonalmente secas. No Brasil, ocorrem 12 gêneros e 28 espécies, das quais 12 são endêmicas. Os representantes de Capparaceae são plantas lenhosas, com folhas simples ou 3-folioladas (Crateva), flores com ovário elevado por um ginóforo exserto e fruto carnoso. O objetivo deste trabalho foi descrever as espécies de Capparaceae ocorrentes no Ceará e mostrar sua distribuição no estado, visando contribuir para o conhecimento e entendimento da flora local. O estudo foi baseado na análise de amostras obtidas durante expedições a campo, coleções pertencentes aos herbários EAC, HUEFS, HVASF, IPA e UFRN, bibliografias e fotografias de tipos. A Flora de Capparaceae do Ceará é composta por cinco espécies: Capparidastrum frondosum, Crateva tapia, Cynophalla flexuosa, Cynophalla hastata e Neocalyptrocalyx longifolium. Esse estudo apresenta chave de identificação, descrições, comentários sobre aspectos ecológicos e fenológicos, mapas de distribuição e ilustrações dos táxons. Palavras-chave: taxonomia, florística, distribuição, Nordeste do Brasil. AbstractCapparaceae comprises 25 genera and approximately 500 species, having worldwide distribution, but occurring especially in tropical and subtropical regions and being well represented in seasonally dry tropical forests. In Brazil, there are 12 genera and 28 species, twelve of which are endemic. Species of Capparaceae are woody plants with simple leaves or 3-foliolate (Crateva); flowers having an exsert gynophore and succulent fruits. This study aims to describe the species of Capparaceae occurring in Ceará and map their distribution within the state, thus contributing to the understanding of the local flora. This study was based on the analysis of specimens obtained during field work, material available from the herbaria EAC, HUEFS, HVASF, IPA and UFRN, and examination of bibliography and types. Five species were recorded: Capparidastrum frondosum, Crateva tapia, Cynophalla flexuosa, Cynophalla hastata and Neocalyptrocalyx longifolium. Identification key, descriptions, comments about ecology, phenology, maps and illustrations of each species are provided.

Synopsis of Capparaceae to the flora of Colombia

A taxonomic synopsis of Capparaceae distributed in Colombia was carried out reviewing 1,800 botanical specimens from 13 herbaria in Colombia, five international institutions and close to 100 field collected specimens. We found 32 species and ten genera according to the last taxonomic modification proposed for this family. From these species, we reevaluated the conventional features used on the species identification, from which detailed description for each species and taxonomic keys were developed. In addition, geographic distribution maps in Colombia, and information about vernacular names and Neotropical distribution was added.

Abstract: Cynophalla and Uterveria (Capparaceae) are lectotypified here. Uterveria is placed in synonymy under Cynophalla and Cynophalla amplissima (Lam.) Iltis & Cornejo is proposed as a new combination.
