Neomitranthes obscura (DC.) N. Silveira is an endemic plant of Brazilian Atlantic Forest and widely spread in the sandbanks of “Restinga de Jurubatiba” National Park. It is popularly known by local population as “camboim-de-cachorro” or “cambuí-preto” and recognized by its black ripe fruits. However, specimens with yellow ripe fruits were localized in the “Restinga de Jurubatiba” National Park. The aim of the present study was to evaluate chemical composition of essential oils obtained from leaves and fruits of N. obscura specimens with different fruit color (black and yellow) by GC and GC-MS. Essential oils from leaves of specimens with black and yellow fruits indicated a predominance of sesquiterpenes (81.1% and 84.8%, resp.). Meanwhile, essential oil from black fruits presented a predominance of monoterpenes (50.5%), while essential oil from yellow fruits had sesquiterpenes (39.9%) as major substances. Despite previous studies about this species, including essential oil extraction, to our knowledge this is the first report on N. obscura fruits with different colors. Our results suggest the occurrence of unless two different varieties for this species.

Resumo Inventários florísticos realizados ao sul do estado do Espírito Santo nos últimos anos têm auxiliado a preencher lacunas de coleta de plantas especialmente em áreas de difícil acesso, como a região do Caparaó. Estes estudos resultaram na descoberta de sete espécies de Angiospermas, de ocorrência previamente desconhecida para o estado, coletadas nas Serras do Caparaó e do Valentim. Os materiais coletados foram depositados no herbário VIES. A distribuição geográfica global foi mapeada por meio dos dados obtidos nos sítios Herbário Virtual Reflora e Flora do Brasil 2020. Os sete novos registros aqui reportados para o Espírito Santo pertencem a sete famílias diferentes de Angiospermas: Annonaceae (Guatteria pohliana), Apocynaceae (Peplonia adnata), Asteraceae (Mikania clematidifolia), Cunoniaceae (Weinmannia pinnata), Melastomataceae (Leandra quinquedentata e Pleroma foveolatum) e Ochnaceae (Ouratea campos-portoi). São fornecidos diagnoses das espécies, mapas com a distribuição global atualizada e comentários sobre os ambientes de ocorrência das espécies estudadas. Além de prover informações atualizadas ao Projeto Flora do Espírito Santo, esses dados poderão ser utilizados pelos taxonomistas para atualização do sítio Flora do Brasil 2020. Isto será especialmente útil para aquelas famílias que ainda não estão sendo monografadas na Flora do Espírito Santo.

Genomic DNA isolation is an essential procedure to allow many genetic applications and analyses like that using molecular markers. Obtaining good quality DNA samples is the first step to succeed in such analysis and it depends on effective procedures for harvesting and preserving the plant material, and also for DNA extraction. The use of fresh material is ideal for DNA isolation, however, in studies that involve the harvesting of wild plants this is not always possible, since in most cases, populations are distant from the research laboratory. An alternative is freezing the plant material in liquid nitrogen in the field, but this practice is not feasible in many cases, given the difficulty and danger of transporting the liquid nitrogen tank on places of difficult access. In this study, we present four simple, efficient and low cost methodologies that have been successfully tested for a Myrtaceae species with medicinal potential collected at different biomes, Atlantic Rainforest and Brazilian Savanna (Cerrado). Among the main advantages observed are the reduced use of liquid nitrogen, the use of inexpensive materials and ease of transport and storage of samples. The methods presented here can potentially be applied to other species of this botanical family.
